Rain delays Labor Day golf event

The team of Barton and Hughes won the Championship Flight at the annual Albany Labor Day Golf Tournament with a two day total of 124 strokes, followed by Mitchell and Holson in second with 130, and Echols and Echols with a score of 136 for third place.

Sixty-eight players, grouped into 34 teams of two players each, ended up competing in the tournament after six of the 40 teams originally registered for the event had to cancel due to various last minute conflicts.

Scores from Saturday’s rounds were used to divide the teams into four flights on Sunday.

The second and third flights teed off on Sunday morning, and the first flight and Championship flight were scheduled to take place Sunday afternoon.

“Overall the tournament was good,” said organizer James Waters. “We were a little late teeing off for the afternoon flights on Sunday because of the rain, but we were able to finish the tourney.”

Hosting the tournament was a group effort, said Waters.

“Several people were involved, and they pitched in wherever they were needed,” Waters said. “We sure appreciate all of their help, and I especially want to thank Jason Gardner for cooking the brisket.”

Upcoming events at the golf course include the Wednesday golf scrambles, that start at 5:30 p.m. each week through the fall. Entry fees for the scrambles are $10 for club members and $15 for non-members.

“The annual Kiwanis tournament is coming up Sept. 14,” Waters added. “And the Jr. Garcia tourney will be on homecoming weekend.”

The club championship is expected to take place in late October, but the date has not yet been finalized.
