Kindred food drive gets underway

Staff members from the Kindred Home Health office in Albany are gathering food donations as part of the company’s 14th Annual Food Drive.

Local employees, along with those around the country, have placed food collection bags at various locations in their respective communities and are collecting their “harvest.”

Kindred workers in Albany have already chipped in and donated food and they hope, with the assistance of the community, to achieve the stated goal of “beating the tally from last year, when the company’s annual food drive yielded more than 300,000 meals for donation to food banks and charitable organizations across the country,” said Tracy Sullivan with Kindred.

One in six Americans faces hunger, and that translates to approximately nine percent of seniors affected by hunger or “food insecurity,” as defined by the USDA.

All food donations to the Albany Kindred office will be kept local, Sullivan said, and donation bags are available at the office for those who would like to utilize them.

“We are asking for non-perishable food items and grocery gift cards,” said Sullivan. “We are working with the local food bank and will donate to them. We will be accepting food donations through Friday, Sept. 7.”

Kindred’s annual food drive takes place this time of year because donations to food banks typically drop during the summer, but demands are higher, according to Kindred president David Causby.

“By late summer, many pantries report their shelves are empty,” Causby said. “One food bank administrator said it best: ‘Hunger never takes a vacation’.”

Donations will be accepted at the Albany office located at 100 North Main, or people can call 325-762-2854 to have donations picked up by a Kindred representative.

“I will be glad to come and pick up your donations,” said Sullivan. “Help us help our local community.”
