 Eligio “Lee” Rodriguez Garcia, age 78 of Albany, passed away Sunday, Jan. 17, 2021. A private family-only funeral mass will be held at 9:30 a.m., Friday, Jan. 22 at Jesus of Nazareth Catholic Church with Father Prakash Dias officiating. Interment will follow at 10:45 a.m. at Albany Cemetery under the direction of Morehart Mortuary. 

NADINE BOLAND

Nadine Boland, age 80 of Albany, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2021. Graveside funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 16 at the Albany Cemetery with Kyle Viertel officiating. Interment followed under the direction of Morehart Mortuary. 

Merle Nadine Adams was born Nov. 9, 1940 in Granger, Wyoming to Roy and Idonna Hereford Adams. She married Billy Boland in Kemmerer, Wyoming on May 9, 1963. 

Thomas Steddum

Thomas Dale Steddum, age 86, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2021 in Odessa, TX. He was born in Haskell County, TX on Feb. 18, 1934 to Ocie Lee and Sammye (Cox) Steddum.  He married Geraline Bothe in 1976 Odessa, TX and they shared 34 years together until she passed in 2011.

LEONA MARTYN

Leona Martyn, age 97 of Albany, passed away Sunday, Jan. 17, 2021. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, Jan. 22 at First United Methodist Church of Albany with Rev. Tim Trimble officiating.  Interment will follow in the Albany Cemetery under the direction of Morehart Mortuary. 

Leona Riley was born Aug. 23, 1923 in Woodson, Texas to Dewey Riley and Villa Stubblefield Riley. On Aug. 7, 1945, she married R.E. “Bob” Martyn in Abilene, Texas. 

2 MISD holidays scheduled

The Moran Independent School District will be closed on Monday, Jan. 18 in observance of Martin Luther King Day. 

Classes will resume at the usual times on Tuesday, Jan. 19.

MISD also will have a student holiday on Friday, Jan. 22, to enable students to attend the county stock show. 

Teachers and staff will have a comp day on Friday, Jan. 22. 

The next district holiday at MISD will be on Monday, Feb. 15 in observance of Presidents Day. 

Hawley named to post-season teams

Moran Bulldog Arren Hawley was named First Team All-Region III and Honorable Mention All-State as a punter for the 2020 football season.  

This is the second year in a row that Hawley has received the post-season honors.

Property tax collections pick up

As is typical, property tax payments at the Shackelford County Appraisal District accelerated just before the end of the year and have continued to come in steadily even with limited access at the SCAD lobby, according to chief appraiser Clayton Snyder.

“We’ve been busy since the first part of December, and it’s picked up this month,” said Snyder, who added that the front door remains locked because of COVID concerns.

Youth season continues Saturday

The youth basketball league boys played at home last Saturday.

The sixth grade team lost to Hawley 41-14 in their first game. Scoring were Connor Smith 6, Colter Edgar 4, Zane Green 2, and Levi New 2.

The team won their second game against Jim Ned Red, 25-13. Scoring were Green 9, Edgar 8, Smith 6, and Jayden Green 2.

The fifth grade team won both games Saturday, defeating Jim Ned 37-8 in the first round. Scoring were Clay Chapman 18, Aiden Vickers 14, Graham Ceder 3 and Senio Togia 2.

In the second game, Albany picked up a 31-4 win over Eula White.

AJHS teams win 3 of 4 against ACS

The junior high Cubs and Lady Cubs returned to action last week after the Christmas break, with three of the four teams winning their bouts against Abilene Chistian School.

All four local teams were supposed to be in action on Monday vs. Cisco, but the games were cancelled due weather conditions and will not be rescheduled, according to athletic director Ryder Peacock.

The junior high will be back on the court next Monday, Jan. 18 with the boys playing in Hawley and the girls hosting Hawley. Games at both sites will start at 5:30 p.m.

Volleyball team to be recognized

Members of the Albany Lady Lions volleyball team, which advanced all the way to the state semifinals under coach M.J. Reneau last fall, will be recognized in a special ceremony this Thursday, Jan. 14 at 6:00 p.m.

The special event will be held in the main gym, and is open to to parents and supporters, as long as the 50 percent gym capacity is not exceeded.
