Local numbers jump, but still low

Several new local positive cases of COVID-19 were reported over the past two weeks, with the total increasing to nine for Shackelford County.

The county is now using data provided by the Texas Department of State Health Services rather than relying solely on the tests administered by the two local health clinics.

The DSHS COVID-19 Dashboard was showing a total of 62 tests administered as of Wednesday, with nine positives.

Day Camp staff works to keep campers safe

ResourceCare’s 20th annual Summer Day Camp began Monday, July 6, averaging 85 campers, and 55 workers and volunteers each day of the three-week camp.

Because of COVID-19 restrictions and health concerns, organizers and workers have been tasked with creating a checkpoint at drop-off each morning.

ResourceCare camp nurse Judy Patterson said she is taking each camper’s temperature before they come in the youth center each morning, and only campers and staff are allowed inside the building.

Longtime civic leader A.V. Jones Jr. dies

Energy industry entrepreneur and Albany ambassador A.V. Jones Jr. died Sunday afternoon, July 12 after struggling with health issues for much of this year. He was 88.

Jones moved to Albany with his parents soon after he was born in June 1932. After graduating from Albany High School and the University of Oklahoma, he formed an oil partnership with his father and brother in Albany, the first of many companies that he either founded, cofounded, or invested in over a period of almost seven decades.

County voters choose Rogers

Glenn Rogers of Graford won the Republican primary runoff for District 60 state representative Tuesday, recording an overwhelming margin here but running a close race overall with 52.4 percent of the total vote over opponent Jon Francis of Cisco.

Rogers finished second to Francis in the March primary but managed to turn the race around for the COVID-delayed runoff.

Turnout was fairly low, with 555 of Shackelford County’s 2,300 voters casting ballots in the single race Republican runoff. Only 15 county residents voted as Democrats.

BARBARA “BOBBIE’ MOBERLEY

Barbara “Bobbie” Moberley, 79, of Abilene passed away peacefully Tuesday, July 14, 2020 at Hendrick Hospice Care in Abilene, after a lengthy battle with multiple ailments. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 9:45 a.m., Saturday morning, July 18 at Morehart Mortuary in Albany. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. that morning at the Albany Cemetery.

Charles Billy McAfee

Charles Billy (C.B.) McAfee, age 87, went home to be with our Lord and Savior on July 10, 2020. Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 14, at Friendship Baptist Church of Albany with Pastor Paul Johnston officiating. Burial followed in the Albany Cemetery under the direction of Bailey Howard Funeral Home of Clyde. 

MARIE LOGGAINS

Marie Loggains, age 86 of Breckenridge, passed away Tuesday, July 7, 2020. Funeral services were held at Saturday, July 11 at the Elliott Street Church of Christ with Jim Cox and Don Nelson officiating. Interment followed in the Albany Cemetery. 

Marie Adaline Reynolds was born Dec. 19, 1933 in Albany, Texas to parents, James Herbert Reynolds and Cleo Hash Reynolds. She went to school in San Saba and Albany and then went on to attend Draughn’s Business College. 

DORRIS DAVIS

Dorris Davis, age 94 of Albany, passed away Wednesday, July 8, 2020. A funeral service for family only was held Sunday, July 12 at Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Tom Chandler officiating. 

Interment followed in the Throckmorton Cemetery under the direction of Morehart Mortuary.

Oma Dorris Everett was born April 13, 1926 in Throckmorton County, Texas to Lucious Eugene Everett and Selina Elizabeth Saunders Everett. She graduated from Throckmorton High School.

Local bars transition to smoke-free

Two popular Albany restaurants now are 100 percent smoke free inside their buildings.

The smoke aroma is no longer a part of the dinning experience at The Beehive and The Icehouse restaurants.

Icehouse owner Melissa Williams said the decision to go smoke free came with the implementation of health precautions when the restaurant reopened after the COVID-19 shutdown.

Booster club begins work on program

The Albany Athletic Booster Club’s annual kick off meeting for the upcoming school year  took place Wednesday evening, July 1, at The Feed Store, and although members are working on raising funds for the new school year by selling ads in the annual football program, details were not available before press time this week.

Ad costs and sizes will be reported in a future edition of The Albany News.
