Lion basketball players picked for all-district

Members of the Lion varsity basketball team were honored with various selections to the All-District Team for District 8-2A .

Junior Cade Neve received the Lions’ lone superlative award as 6th Man of the Year for the district, while two seniors were tapped for the first team and a senior and a freshman were named to the second team.

Koemel plays in 1st tourney

Albany senior Alayna Koemel participated in her first golf meet of the season last week, playing as a medalist and tying for sixth overall at the Hawley golf tournament held before spring break on March 4.

“Alayna set a personal goal to break 130, and she accomplished that,” said golf coach Tate Thompson.

Koemel recorded an 18-hole score of 128 for the day.

She was Albany’s only entry at Hawley.

The local senior will travel to Shady Oaks Golf Course in Baird for a girls competition hosted by Jim Ned on March 16.

Tennis team to host meet

After taking a week off for spring break, members of the Albany High School tennis team will be back in action on Wednesday, March 18, hosting players from Breckenridge and Anson at the local courts starting at 2:00 p.m.

AHS athletes will then participate in the Seymour Invitational Tournament, with the girls’ matches planned on March 25, and the boys teams playing on March 30 along with mixed doubles.

The district meet is set for the following week on April 6 and April 8 at Abilene’s Rose Park Tennis Center.

Softball league to get underway

Close to 40 girls are signed up to participate in the Albany Girls Softball Association this year, and the new president, Beth Roysdon, is working on schedules.

“As of now, the 8-U and 10-U are playing against Breckenridge teams,” said Roysdon. “The 8-U will compete in a tournament in Eastland on Saturday, April 4. We are also trying to get games scheduled with Anson and Stamford teams.”

District tournaments for the 8-U and the 10-U teams will be in mid-May, according to Roysdon.

Track teams to compete in Hamlin

Despite working short-handed, Albany track-sters competed in the Buckaroo Relays in Breckenridge last Thursday, placing in a number of events.

The local high school teams will compete in Hamlin on Saturday, with preliminary running events and field events starting at 9:00 a.m. Running finals will start at 3:00 p.m.

“This was our first meet of the season and we are still getting out feet under us,” boys coach Rod Britting said. “We are pleased with the times and places considering the short amount of practice time we have had.”

Photo packages ready

Color photo packets of the youth basketball and Little Dribbler teams, taken by The Albany News, are ready for pickup at the News office. 

In addition, a number of packages from previous sports have not yet been claimed.

The Albany High School softball team and individual pictures are scheduled to be taken in the next couple of weeks and should be ready by the end of March.

Youth packages are priced at $18 plus tax, while the cost of school sports packages is $25 plus tax.

Jr. high track teams improve times, distances

The Cubs and Lady Cubs competed at the Breckenridge track and field meet on March 3, bringing back several ribbons and recording improved times and distances.

The junior high teams were off this week for spring break, but they will compete again on Friday, March 20 at Eastland. The district track meet has been set for March 28 in Roscoe.

Regional send-off planned for powerlifter

There will be a send-off for Wesley Estridge at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 13 starting at the high school and going through town towards Abilene, as the local high school junior heads to the Texas High School Powerlifting Association Region 1, Division 3 Championships in Sundown this weekend, and everyone is encouraged to cheer him on.

Estridge is ranked third in the region in the super heavy weight class, with total lifts of 1570, qualifying for the third straight year.

Lady Bulldogs earn honors

Several Moran Lady Bulldogs were recently awarded all-district basketball honors.

Sophomore Johnnie Hise was selected to the second team all-district.

Senior November Meredith, junior Dariann Hawley, sophomore Reshaley Schafer, and freshman Chloe Hendricks were honorable mention all-district.

Sophomores Hannah Rogers, Sage O’Keefe, and Harmony Slaughter joined Meredith, Hawley, Hise, Hendricks, and Schafer on the academic all-district team.

MISD classes to resume Monday

Classes at the Moran Independent School District will resume at the normal time on Monday, March 16, after the week-long spring break vacation on March 9-13. 

Cheer Tryouts

Practices for students trying out for next year’s cheer squads will take place from 4:05 to 5:00 p.m. on Monday, March 16 and again on Wednesday, March 18.

Cheer, mascot, and twirler tryouts are scheduled to take place on Friday, March 20, starting immediately after school.

Parents are not allowed inside the gym during tryouts.
