Weather conditions hamper track start

The high school track teams got off to a slower than usual start last week due to weather conditions.

Albany traveled to Clyde for the usual first meet of the season, but field events were canceled and running events moved up due to cold and windy conditions.

The track teams will compete again at the Breckenridge meet set for Thursday (today) with field events starting at 4:00 p.m., followed by running events at 6:15 p.m.

Lions open with tourney wins

The varsity Lion baseball team opened the season last week with three wins at the Hamlin tournament.

The varsity traveled to Anson on Tuesday, bringing home a 5-3 loss. Details of the game were not available at press time.

The Lions will play in the Windthorst tournament starting on Thursday (today) with a 12:00 noon game against Archer City. Albany is scheduled to face off against Gunter at 6:00 p.m. The team will return on Friday for a third and final bout at 12:00 noon game against Windthorst.

Ladies win 2, prepare for 6 games this weekend

The Lady Lion softball team got back on track last week with a pair of wins as they prepare for the third and final tournament this week before the start of district competition on March 19.

The team will travel to Snyder starting Thursday (today) for a three-day tournament, opening with a 5:00 p.m. bout against Fort Stockton, immediately followed by a 7:00 p.m. game against Tahoka.

The local girls will be back in action at 1:00 p.m. on Friday against Seminole., with a 5:00 p.m. game against Hermleigh.

6 Lions earn spots on all-district basketball squad

Lion basketball players captured two superlative awards, three first team picks, one second team selection, and several honorable mentions on the District 8-2A all-district team.

Senior Cameron Dacus was named the Defensive MVP and junior Coby Knight was awarded the Sixth Man honor by the district coaches.

The Lions ended the regular season in second place behind the Stamford Bulldogs with a 7-3 district record. Stamford was given the other three top awards.

Tennis teams start out with busy schedule

Albany High School tennis players competed well in their first two outings, which included the Hawley Invitational on Feb. 21 and the Seymour Invitational on Monday and Tuesday of last week.

“Everyone did well for their first tournaments,” said coach Sara Wilson.

The Albany team hosted Miles, Stamford, and Rotan for a meet held at Rose Park on Wednesday, but results were not available at press time.

Local players will also host a tri-meet on March 20 after spring break.

AJHS track teams run well at first meet

The seventh and eighth grade track teams opened the season at a Clyde track meet on Friday, March 1, placing in a number of events.

The Cubs and Lady Cubs also competed on Tuesday, March 5 at a meet in Breckenridge, but results were not available at press time.

Ryder Peacock is coaching both junior high boys teams.

“Against a tough field of seventh grade athletes, we finished very well, being in the top six in just about every event we competed in,” said Peacock.

Little Dribblers end season last Saturday

The boys Little Dribblers teams finished their season on Saturday in the old Albany High School gym, and the girls teams ended the season a couple of days earlier.

“I would like to thank all the coaches and referees for volunteering their time and energy in making this another successful season,” said organizer Clint Chapman. “I also want to thank Albany ISD for allowing our league to use the gym.” 

Boys Black and girls Turquoise both ended their seasons undefeated.

Moran classes to dismiss for spring break

Moran Independent School District will release for spring break at the normal time, 3:38 p.m., on Friday, March 8. 

MISD offices will be closed for spring break March 11-15. Classes will resume at the normal time on Monday, March 18.

The next school holiday at MISD will be Good Friday, April 19 and Easter Monday, April 22. 

Cheerleader tryouts were held at Moran on Tuesday, March 5. Results will be reported when they are available.

MHS athletes to run in Gordon

The cold and potentially icy weather postponed the start of the Moran track season by one week.

Hico called off the junior high portion of their track meet scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 28, and MISD cancelled the trip.

Gordon ISD postponed their track meet from Monday, March 4 until today, March 7.

Moran varsity and junior high Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs are scheduled to compete at Gordon.

Chamber Family Fest set today

The Albany Chamber of Commerce sponsored “FamilyFest” will be held this evening, March 7 at the Albany Golf Course from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Over 100 individuals have called in their RSVPs for the meal and family fun event, according to Chamber manager Mary Beth Jones.

“We’ve had an outstanding response to our fish fry,” Jones said on Tuesday. “We already have over 100 reservations right now. We even have several people coming in from out of town to join our Chamber!”

The event is being held in place of the Chamber banquet.
