Lion basketball players captured two superlative awards, three first team picks, one second team selection, and several honorable mentions on the District 8-2A all-district team.

Senior Cameron Dacus was named the Defensive MVP and junior Coby Knight was awarded the Sixth Man honor by the district coaches.

The Lions ended the regular season in second place behind the Stamford Bulldogs with a 7-3 district record. Stamford was given the other three top awards.

“Cameron did a good job on some tough assignments on defense, creating a lot of problems for our opponents with his defensive pressure and ability to read passes,” coach Ryder Peacock said. “Coby was huge lift for us off the bench this season, which is why he was named the Sixth Man. He not only changed the game for us on offense, he was very effective on defense as well.”

Seniors Joshua Dyer and Ryan Hill, along with junior Ben West, were all voted a seat on the first team.

“Josh and Ben both had excellent seasons, with each of them contributing in different ways,” the coach said. “Josh was our most consistent rebounder, and Ben created offense for us off the dribble, along with his ability to knock down three-pointers.”

Hill received a first team selection despite only playing in the first two district games before injuring his knee, which had to be repaired surgically.

“The district did a good job of recognizing Ryan’s talents and presence even in the short time he was on the court in district this season,” Peacock said. “He had a great career for us, scoring over 1,000 points during his career.”

Senior Cutter Cowart was given a place on the second team.

“Cutter did very well even though he was battling through an injury the entire season,” the coach said. “He did a good job of adjusting his game, becoming a huge presence for us at the high post position against the zone defense.”

Receiving honorable mention were seniors Derek Isbell and Kade Everitt, along with junior Blaine Kayga.

“Overall, the district did a good job of recognizing our guys,” Peacock said. “While we didn’t get to where we wanted as a team in the end, we had another strong season, and I am proud of their efforts.”
