Moran fire department plans bake sale Nov. 18

The City of Moran Volunteer Fire Department is holding a bake sale this Sunday, Nov. 18, from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the Moran Community Center.

“If you don’t feel like baking this year, come and get some goodies for your family’s Thanksgiving meal,” said organizer Michelle Taggart. “We will even bring it to you.”

MISD hosts veterans lunch Monday

The Moran Independent School District hosted its annual Veterans Day luncheon at the school auditorium on Monday, Nov. 12.

“We had a small turnout, probably due to the frigid weather,” said superintendent Danny Freeman. “But we were able to display photos of local veterans that were recently donated to the Moran Museum.”

Thanksgiving Meal

Moran ISD’s annual Thanksgiving meal is being served today, Nov. 15.

Family members are invited to come to the school and sit down to eat a traditional Thanksgiving meal with their children.

AHS ag students compete at Cisco

Several members of the Albany FFA Chapter competed at the Big Country District’s Leadership Development Events on Monday, Nov. 12 at Cisco College.

Seth Hale made up the Albany entry that placed fourth high team in Job Interview.

The team of Aspen Box, Kamryn Browning, and Susan Cormack placed sixth in Radio Broadcasting.

Alayna Koemel competed in Senior Creed Speaking, earning sixth place for the Albany team.

Albany’s Greenhand Quiz team placed 10th in district. The team members were Aspen Box, Tyler Everitt, Clara Holson, and Luke Ivy.

Jr. high girls basketball teams get started Nov. 12

The junior high girls basketball teams opened the season on Monday by hosting Hawley in a set of three games.

The seventh grade team will play next at the Woodson tournament on Saturday, with the first round set for 8:00 a.m. against Woodson. They will play the Moran Lady Pups at 10:40 a.m.

The local teams will be on the road next Monday, Nov. 19 in Haskell for games starting at 5:30 p.m.

KAREN CLEMENT

Lucy Karen Clement passed away suddenly Monday, Oct. 15, 2018 in Harlingen, Texas. She was 77 years old.

Karen was born in Albany, Texas to J.T. “Tom” and Dovie “ Dub” Garrett Feb. 16, 1941. She married Jack Clement on Sept. 4, 1959 in Albany, Texas.

No matter where she went, Karen never met a stranger. She loved meeting new people and working with the public. She worked as a hair stylist for almost 30 years before hanging up her scissors to pursue other interests that provided her even more opportunities to interact with the public.

Margie Driskill Davis, 89, joined her Heavenly Father at 9:45 p.m., on Nov. 10, 2018, in Glen Rose, Texas. Family and friends gathered to celebrate her life of 89 years, Nov. 13, 2018, at Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers. LARRY SHOEMAKER, SR.

 Larry Shoemaker, Sr., age 87 of Albany, passed away Monday, Nov. 5, 2018. Funeral services were held  Saturday, Nov. 10 at First Baptist Church of Albany with Pastor Paul Johnston officiating. Interment will follow in the Albany Cemetery under the direction of Morehart Mortuary. 

Larry Dean Shoemaker was born on Nov. 10, 1930 to Harold Shoemaker and Leora Perrigo Shoemaker in Victor, Iowa. Larry worked for Halliburton for 35 years and later started Shoemaker Stimulation Services. 

Pig validations planned Nov. 13-14

Stock show swine projects need to validated next week, and the Shackelford County validation committee, which includes ag instructor Chris Beard, county extension agent Michaela Bradford, and two local representatives from the Shackelford County Youth and Livestock Association will be at the Albany High School ag farm on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, Nov. 13 and 14, and will work as a mobile unit, traveling across the county on the afternoons of Tuesday, Nov. 13 and Wednesday, Nov. 14.

Shoeboxes to be filled by Nov. 18

Congregations at Matthews Memorial Presbyterian, First Baptist Church, and First Christian Church are collecting shoe box gifts for the Samaritan’s Purse annual Operation Christmas Child, and will gladly accept donations for the program from now until Sunday, Nov. 18.

Abilene is the nearest drop-off location, and First Christian pastor Brad McBee will deliver locally collected shoeboxes to First Baptist Church in Abilene on Nov. 19.

“We still have boxes available,” said McBee earlier this week. “It’s a great program. We delivered over 100 boxes last year.”

Nativity practice now underway

Friday and Saturday, Dec. 14-15 have been chosen as performance dates for the biennial Albany Nativity, with preparations already underway. The performances will be at 7:30 p.m.

“The cast has been chosen and notified,” said director Lorna Ayers. “Rehearsals began on Monday and will be twice a week until the week of the show.”
