Lucy Karen Clement passed away suddenly Monday, Oct. 15, 2018 in Harlingen, Texas. She was 77 years old.

Karen was born in Albany, Texas to J.T. “Tom” and Dovie “ Dub” Garrett Feb. 16, 1941. She married Jack Clement on Sept. 4, 1959 in Albany, Texas.

No matter where she went, Karen never met a stranger. She loved meeting new people and working with the public. She worked as a hair stylist for almost 30 years before hanging up her scissors to pursue other interests that provided her even more opportunities to interact with the public.

Karen took great pride in her neighborhood and worked tirelessly to ensure it was a place of which all residents could be proud. She was president of the neighborhood Board of Directors for many years. She was always eager to pitch in and lend a helping hand to all her friends and neighbors.

She was an animal rescuer and lover of wildlife who devoted her life to the rescue and care of countless animals who had nowhere else to go and no one else to care for them. She could always be found zipping around the neighborhood in her golf cart feeding the abandoned cats she took under her wing. She was an avid supporter of spay/neuter laws and pet adoption.

Her other passions included cooking, baking, sewing, gardening, arts and crafts, puzzles, and feeding and observing the many species of birds that reside in the Valley.

Karen was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband, Jack Clement, of Harlingen, Texas; her daughter and son-in-law, Kelly and Brent Haferkamp, of Garland, Texas; and her brother and sister-in-law, Dale and Mary Ellen Garrett, of Harlingen, Texas.

A memorial to celebrate her life will be held at a later date.

If so desired, memorials may be given in Karen’s memory to Kitties of the Valley, P.O. Box 2745, Harlingen, Texas 78551 or Humane Society of Harlingen, 1106 Markowsky Avenue, Harlingen, Texas 78550.
