Jr. high girls basketball teams get started Nov. 12

The junior high girls basketball teams opened the season on Monday by hosting Hawley in a set of three games.

The seventh grade team will play next at the Woodson tournament on Saturday, with the first round set for 8:00 a.m. against Woodson. They will play the Moran Lady Pups at 10:40 a.m.

The local teams will be on the road next Monday, Nov. 19 in Haskell for games starting at 5:30 p.m.

The seventh/eighth grade combined B team was the lone winner in the opener, defeating Hawley 15-9. Scoring were Maci Hatchett 6, Samantha Hinkle 4, Chloe Broadus 3, and Ashley Sanchez 2.

The 8A girls fell 24-14 to Hawley. Scoring were  Brylee Moore 10, Gracie Price 2, and Ella Webb 2.

“We had a great comeback in the second half, but still came up short in the last quarter,” coach Ginger Norton said. “This is a good group of girls who hustle. I can already see improvement from last year.”

The 7A team lost in overtime 18-14.

Scoring points were Callan Edgar 4, Ashlyn Holson 4, Braylyn Abbate 4, and Kiana Roberson 2. 

“For a first game, the girls did some good things,” coach Lauren Peacock said. “We had some opportunities to finish, but they just weren’t falling for us.”

The coach commended the team for working hard.
