Blood drive set at high school Nov. 8

The Albany Student Council will host a blood drive at the secondary campus next Thursday, Nov. 8 from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m., and to help students understand the importance of donating blood, Meek bloodmobile representative Frances Baker will speak at the high school assembly this Friday, Nov. 2, at 8:00 a.m.

“We are hoping for good participation for the blood drive again this year,” said advisor Donnie Lucas. “It was excellent last year, especially with it being our first year.”

Moran Red Ribbon activities underway

Red Ribbon Week is underway at the Moran Independent School District, and students have been encouraged to dress up for the special theme days this week.

On Monday the theme “I won’t get mixed up with drugs!” was reinforced by “mixed-matched” clothes.

Camo attire on Tuesday encouraged students to “Join the fight against drugs!”

Students could dress Wednesday as their favorite character for “My character is too great for drugs!”

“Stomp out drugs!” is the dress-up theme for today, and everyone was urged to wear boots.

Study Club to honor veterans Nov. 8

Local veterans will be honored guests at the sixth annual Albany Study Club Veterans Day Luncheon next week, and committee chairman Tammy Glover wanted to make sure that everyone noted the change in location this year.

“We are having the luncheon at 12:00 noon Thursday, Nov. 8, at Friendship Baptist Church,” said Glover. “This is a new location for the event! We tried to highlight the change on the invitations we are sending out to all local veterans who are already on our mailing list.”

Lady Bulldogs qualify for playoffs

The Moran Lady Bulldogs ended regular district play at home, on senior night, with a win against Woodson on Tuesday, Oct. 23. Moran won in four sets 25-9, 25-14, 19-25, 25-10, and qualified for the playoffs for the first time since 1994.

“My girls accomplished so many things this season, including making it to the playoffs,” said coach Dakota Fowler. “By doing that, they definitely proved themselves. Moran has not been to the playoffs in 24 years.”

Charity tournament raises $8,000+

Winning the fourth annual Junior Garcia Golf Tournament that took place at the Albany Golf Course on Saturday, Oct. 27 was The Wolf Pack, made up of Jason Gardner, Jeff Balliew, Ronnie Kitchens, and Mike Reddin.

The second place team was led by Charles Barrett, and Clint Chapman’s team took third.

Rodney Barton and Charles Barrett won the longest drive competitions.

Closest to the hole bragging rights went to Akisha Holson and Jason Gardner, while Lute Wheeler won the gun raffle.

Veterans to be recognized at assembly

Veterans are invited to attend a special Veterans Day Assembly hosted by the secondary school next Friday, Nov. 9, in the high school gym starting at 10:00 a.m.

The program will open with the Presentation of Colors by local Boy Scouts, followed by the National Anthem played by members of the Albany Junior/Senior High School band.

Student Council president Ryan Hill will introduce the veterans.

Other Council members will lead pledges to the American Flag and the Texas Flag, and will present a patriotic poem.

BOBBY ADKINS

Bobby Gene Adkins went to be with our Lord and Savior on the morning of Monday, Oct. 29, 2018. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2018, at First Baptist Church of Albany with Rev. Jeff Turner officiating. Services have been entrusted to Morehart Mortuary.

Bobby Gene Adkins was born in Montague County, Texas to Claude Weldon and Mattie Belle Adkins. He graduated from CF Brewer High School in White Settlement, Texas. He served in the Army in 1960. 

BETTE STONE

Bette Irene Salters Stone, 89, passed away Sunday, October 28, 2018 in Bowie.

Family received friends on Tuesday evening, Oct. 30, 2018 at the White Family Funeral Home in Bowie.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home of Bowie.

NORMA OLIVER MILES

Norma Oliver Miles, age 78 of Abilene, passed away Friday, Oct. 26, 2018. A memorial service was held Monday, Oct. 29 in the pavilion at the Albany Cemetery with Chaplain Jim Hargrove officiating. Services were entrusted to Morehart Mortuary of Albany.

Norma Oliver was born Dec. 20, 1939 in Nimrod, Texas to parents, Norman Oliver and Annie Burge Oliver. She married Richard Lee Miles, Jr. on May 30, 1962 in Juarez, Mexico. 

Rev. Donald  Wirsdorfer Jr.

Former Albany resident and pastor Donald Earl Wirsdorfer Jr. passed away Sunday, Oct. 14, 2018, at the age of 83. 

The celebration of life service will be Saturday, Nov. 3, at 11:00 a.m. at Ridglea Christian Church, 6720 Elizabeth Lane, Fort Worth, Texas. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the Alzheimers Association or Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
