Lady Bulldogs qualify for playoffs

The Moran Lady Bulldogs ended regular district play at home, on senior night, with a win against Woodson on Tuesday, Oct. 23. Moran won in four sets 25-9, 25-14, 19-25, 25-10, and qualified for the playoffs for the first time since 1994.

“My girls accomplished so many things this season, including making it to the playoffs,” said coach Dakota Fowler. “By doing that, they definitely proved themselves. Moran has not been to the playoffs in 24 years.”

Fellow students and town members gathered for a loud send-off for the volleyball team on Monday afternoon when the Lady Bulldogs left school for the bi-district game against Vernon Northside held at 6:30 p.m. in Munday.

Northside is runner-up from District 5, and Moran took third in District 6. The two teams met earlier this year in a pre-district battle on Aug. 14. Northside claimed that match in straight sets.

The bi-district playoff game ended similarly, with the Lady Bulldogs falling 12-25, 15-25, 8-25, but Fowler is still very proud of her players and their efforts throughout the season.

“Our motto for this year was “Prove IT” and these girls definitely did that,” said Fowler. “We started this season trying to build the girls’ confidence in not just volleyball, but also in their own lives. The way these girls reacted, I couldn’t have been more proud of them!”

Fowler said that her assistant coach, Jo Hise, was amazing.

“I couldn’t have done anything this year without her,” the coach said. “This was my first time to coach, and I wouldn’t have wanted it to be anywhere else. These girls have changed me more than they will ever know and I am very blessed to have been given the opportunity to coach them.”

Fowler praised her two seniors, Summer Pederson and Kaylin New, for stepping up and giving it their all, and said that each player did her part to make it an enjoyable season.

“Way to go girls, way to prove yourselves,” Fowler said. “Now we have something to build off of for next year, and I can’t wait!”

The junior high Lady Bulldogs also ended their regular season with a win last Tuesday, defeating Woodson 25-13, 25-17.

Football

The Bulldogs lost their first game in District 6 to the heavily favored and still undefeated Blackwell Hornets. There was some confusion about the final score, with many reporting it as 64-20, but the refs calling the game with three minutes left in the fourth quarter, declaring it 66-20.

Tomorrow, Nov. 2, the ’Dawgs travel to Loraine for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

The game will be the varsity’s final match of the regular season, though a win would keep them in the running for the playoffs.

Moran was scheduled to host the Trent Gorillas on Friday, Nov. 9, but Trent forfeited and the game has been cancelled.

If Moran beats Loraine, and Loraine falls to Blackwell on Nov. 9, then the Bulldogs should end up as the runner-up team from District 6, with a post season berth.

The junior high team lost in Blackwell, 47-7, on Oct. 25.

The middle school Bulldogs host Loraine tonight at 5:00 p.m., and travel to Trent on Nov. 8 for their final game of the season.
