Sports banquet planned May 11

The 2021 All-Sports Banquet, which honors local students for their participation in high school athletic events, has been set for Tuesday, May 11 at the Albany High School gymnasium at 7:00 p.m.

The serving line will begin at 7:00 p.m., according to Athletic Booster Club secretary Tisha Wilkins.

High school athletes will be recognized, and coaches will announce winners of various awards, including several special memorial awards.

Lady Lions end season at bi-district

The Lady Lion softball team lost two close games against Anson in the bi-district round of the Class 2A playoffs last week, ending the season for the Albany girls.

Anson won the first game of the series, 2-0, on Thursday in a game that was moved to an all-weather turf field at Hermleigh due to rain.

Anson took the second game 6-5, played at another all-weather field at Stanton on Saturday.

Future bright for Albany’s young tennis team

The Albany High School tennis team made an impressive showing at the Region 2-2A tennis tournament held April 26-27 in North Richland Hills, with junior Sarah Cotter making her first trip to the state meet in girls singles.

Albany’s other girls singles competitor, freshman Sidney Russell, finished fourth in the region, and the girls double duo of Susie Cormack and Ella Webb fought their way through the tournament to earn third place medals.

NSES field day planned May 24

The annual field day for Nancy Smith Elementary School preschool through sixth grade students returns this year and is set for Monday, May 24 at the City Park.

Students will begin being bused to the park at 9:00 a.m. with events starting afterward, according to NSES administrative assistant Stephanie Gleitz.

Events for the students will include sack races, hurdles, tug-of-war, water kickball, and water relay.

Moran’s Alli Scott to run at state

Moran sophomore athlete Alli Scott took home the gold in the 100 meter hurdles at the Region 2 1A track meet at Angelo State University in April and earned a trip to the University Interscholastic League Track and Field State Championships taking place this weekend, May 6 to May 8.

The girls 1A 100 meter hurdles is the third event on Saturday, May 8, in Mike A. Myers Stadium at the University of Texas campus in Austin.

The stadium is located at 707 Clyde Littlefield Drive.

Tiffany Wade crowned at Moran’s 2021 prom

Moran senior Tiffany Wade was crowned as Moran High School’s 2021 Prom Queen during last Saturday’s annual event held at the Moran Event Center.

The MHS prom queen, with nominees from the senior class, is elected by all the students who attend the event.

Wade is a lifelong resident of Moran except one year when she attended school in Kansas.

She has been involved in volleyball all four years of high school, as well as participating in track for three years, basketball for two seasons, and cross country the last two years.

Hise advances to state

Junior 4-H member Johnnie Hise took part in the 4-H Fashion Show on Friday, April 30 in San Angelo and placed first in her division, advancing her to the state contest.

Hise will travel to College Station on June 8 to compete in her category of ‘Construction-Semi-Formal to Formal,’ according to Shackelford County extension agent and 4-H sponsor Kloey Painter.

ALMA CLEVELAND

Alma Rae (Bear) Law Cleveland, 91, of Albany died Friday, Apr. 30, 2021 in an Abilene hospice facility. Graveside services were held Tuesday, May 4, at the Albany Cemetery under the direction of Bailey Howard Funeral Home of Clyde.

Alma was born Dec. 12, 1929 in Ibex to James and Ila (Bowman) Law. She graduated from Albany High School and attended Tarleton State University. She married Warren D. (Skid) Cleveland in Albany in 1956. 

Alma loved her cats and her family, caring for many of her relatives in Albany over the years.

NELDA “CHARLEEN” DONAWAY

Nelda Charleen Davis was born on Dec. 17, 1946 to Charles and Aileen Davis in Baird, Texas. She went to school in Putnam, Texas where she played basketball and was a cheerleader. 

While in school, she met and fell in love with L.C. Donaway. They were married on Aug. 12, 1966 in Putnam. Together they had two daughters, Gay and Joy. 

State Qualifiers

Albany High School will send three students to the University Interscholastic League state academic meet this Saturday, May 1.

Because of COVID precautions, the event is being held at Abilene Wylie High School rather than in Austin.

Senior Tana Thompson advances in Feature Writing and Headline Writing, senior Hannah Trail will compete in Editorial Writing, and junior Luke Ivy will take part in the Science competition. 

Journalism sponsor Donnie Lucas and science sponsor André Raymond will attend the event with their students.
