Chapman receives Paup scholarship

Albany High School graduate Jackson Chapman has been awarded the Nancy and Ted Paup Big Country Athletic Hall of Fame Scholarship. This scholarship fund is managed by the Community Foundation of Abilene. 

This scholarship goes to an Albany student who is in the top 25 percent of his/her class and participated in varsity athletics. 

Jackson will attend Texas A&M University in the fall and plans to study agricultural business.

Organ concerts set at MMPC

The famous handmade tracker organ at the Matthews Memorial Presbyterian Church in Albany will again be the main attraction when the church opens its doors to Fandangle visitors.

Local organist Sandy Abel will perform during the 2021 Fandangle season, with a planned program to be combined with requests from the audience for favorite hymns, classical pieces, and patriotic music. 

The recitals will begin at 4:00 p.m. on all four Fandangle performance nights, June 18-19 and again on June 25-26, concluding about an hour later.

FBC plans Summer Sunday events

First Baptist Church has several activities planned for the summer.

Every Sunday night starting at 6:00 p.m., the church will sponsor Summer Sundays at the Bumguardner home.

Adults will have a Bible study while kids swim followed by dinner. 

Lifeguards and childcare will be provided every Sunday evening.

FBC will also show the series The Chosen each Sunday night at 6:00 p.m.

The event will be held in the Fellowship Hall, and popcorn will be provided.

Men invited to Promise Keepers Rally

The Kingdom Man and Promise Keepers June rally will be held starting at 6:00 p.m. at Solid Rock Camps in Eastland on Friday, June 18, and all men from Albany and Shackelford County are invited to attend.

Promise Keepers CEO and acclaimed author Ken Harrison will be the special guest speaker.

The event is free and is open to men of all ages. 

Food, fellowship, and worship will be provided during the evening.

Solid Rock Camps is located at 599 CR 570A, Eastland TX 76448.

Volunteers help in June 12 cleanup

Local residents volunteered time last Saturday, June 12 to help with the Chamber of Commerce-  promoted community cleanup day.

“Most of my Chamber board members showed up or worked the day before or the day after,” said Chamber manager Mary Beth Jones. “They give up several Saturdays with no recognition. They do it because they love Albany.”

Volunteers helped to clean the areas leading to the Fandangle grounds and as many public areas as possible, including all of the walking paths, by mowing, weed eating, and picking up trash.

All-Stars play here Saturday

The Albany Little League will host tournament games for the District 5 All-Stars beginning on Saturday.

Both the Albany 12U and 10U All-Stars will play on Saturday, with the 10U starting the action at 9:00 a.m. The 12U team will play at 11:00 a.m.

Albany is also scheduled to host games at 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday if one or both of the local teams is still playing in the double elimination tournament.

Boys join conditioning program

Summer conditioning, along with limited sport-specific training for junior high and high school aged students, is underway and will continue for several more weeks.

The conditioning and football specific training for boys started on Monday and will continue for six consecutive weeks, while the girls’ summer program began on June 7 and will continue through the month of June. The girls will take the first week of July off but return for two more weeks of training in July.

7 on 7 team qualifies for state tourney

Albany’s 7on7 football team qualified for the state tournament last Friday at McMurry University.

The Lions defeated Merkel 13-7 in the D3 championship game to advance to the state tournament set for June 24-26 in College Station.

The Albany group, coached by Anthony Ceder, ended up in a three-way tie for first in pool play, then defeated Merkel to qualify for state.

Local seniors play in FCA games

Eight Albany High School graduates wrapped up their high school athletic careers last weekend during the Big Country  Fellowship of Christian Athlete Festival. 

Parker Henry, Cade Neve, Jackson Chapman, and William Webb sported jerseys for the North team for the 8th annual FCA All-Star baseball game in San Angelo on Friday, June 11 at Donsky Field in San Angelo. 

The South defeated the North by a score of 9-4.

Athletes, parents needed for cushion sales

The Albany Athletic Booster Club is looking for volunteers for the first fundraiser of the year.

The Albany junior and senior high athletes traditionally rent seat cushions at Fandangle. 

Guests are greeted and offered a cushion for a $1 rental, and then the cushions are collected after the show.

All incoming seventh to 12th graders and parents are asked to help with the fundraiser. 

Volunteers do not have to be involved in Fandangle to rent cushions.
