Cheer camp set July 25-27 in “old” gym

The Little Cubs Cheer Camp will continue accepting registration until the start of its three-day run on Monday, July 25.

Preregistration has concluded with all campers preregistered receiving a camp T-shirt. But anyone wishing to attend can still do so, Albany cheerleader sponsor and camp organizer Nickie Leveridge said.

“Kids can still come; they just will not get a shirt.” Leveridge said. “We will have cheer items for sale.”

Registration at the camp will be held in the gym foyer. Camp sessions will be conducted in the old gym.

Hubbard Creek Rangers finish season

The Hubbard Creek Rangers saw their postseason run come to an end Friday, July 15, with their second loss in the Texas West State Tournament.

The Rangers, a combined Intermediate All-Star team of players from Albany an d Breckenridge, went 6-2 during the Little League International Tournament, winning district and sectional championships to advance to the state tourney at Wylie Little League Complex in Abilene.

Albany players on the team were Graham Ceder, Clay Chapman, Colter Edgar, and Aiden Vickers.

Summer workouts to get underway Aug. 1

The start of fall sports is drawing near with Albany High School starting football and volleyball preseason practices Monday, Aug. 1.

The summer conditioning program for boys wrapped up this week, while the girls have another week to go after taking a two-week break earlier in July.

Prospective athletes for football and volleyball have been sent letters outlining two-a-day practices, as well as forms that must be filled out and signed by both students and parents by the opening day of practices.

Booster club to meet July 17

The kickoff meeting for the Albany Athletic Booster Club has been scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Sunday, July 17, at the Albany Junior/Senior High fieldhouse.

Booster Club member Amanda Tabor said several items of business for the upcoming year will be covered.

“We’re going to discuss team parent signup for junior high, JV, and varsity sports for fall,” Tabor said. “We usually start gathering some spring sports moms, too.”

Tabor said the Booster Club’s Ice Cream Supper on Monday, Aug. 8 will also be on the agenda.

Summer Workouts

The Albany Lions athletic program begins the final week of its summer conditioning program Monday, July 18, while the Lady Lions return after a two-week break for two more weeks of conditioning work.

The final week of boys summer sessions will be from 7:00 a.m. to about 8:30 a.m. Monday through Thursday, July 18-21. Workouts include weight lifting, agility drills, and conditioning. Boys will also conducting one-hour skill sessions at 5:00 p.m. Monday and Wednesday.

Rangers qualify for state tournament

The Hubbard Creek Rangers, the combined Albany-Breckenridge Intermediate All-Star team, qualified for the Texas West State Little League Tournament by sweeping Southeast Arlington in the Texas West Section 2 series earlier this month.

The Rangers defeated Southeast Arlinton 19-3 on Saturday, July 2, and 20-2 on Sunday, July 3 at Garland’s Rocker B Ranch complex.

Albany players on the team are Graham Ceder, Clay Chapman, Colter Edgar, and Aiden Vickers.

50 girls attend volleyball camp

The Albany Volleyball Camp was held Monday-Wednesday, June 27-29 with about 50 campers ranging from incoming first graders through ninth graders participating.

“That’s a great number considering it’s right after Fandangle,” Albany volleyball coach M.J. Reneau said. “It’s been pretty even with about 15, 15 and 20 in the different sessions.”

Reneau said she was pleased with the number of repeat campers.

Combined team advances to sectional playoff

The combined Albany-Breckenridge Intermediate All-Star team swept its way to the District 5 championship last week, advancing to sectional play.

In other postseason action, Albany’s Minor All-Stars saw their run come to an end after five games.

The Intermediate team, which is going by the name Hubbard Creek Rangers, went 3-0 in winning the four-team double-elimination bracket.

Athletic Booster Club members start work on ad sales

The Albany Athletic Booster Club will hold a kickoff meeting for the upcoming school year on Sunday, July 17.

Time and location of the meeting are still being worked out, according to Booster Club member Amanda Tabor.

“The kickoff meeting will be about signing up team parents, the ice cream supper, and fundraising plans for the fall,” Tabor said.

Tabor said no new Booster Club projects are planned at this time.

“We’re going to try to keep doing what we’ve been doing in past years,” she said. “Everything seems to be going well.”

Girls to resume workouts July 18

The Albany Lions and Lady Lions concluded the third week of their summer conditioning programs this week with the girls now taking a break before resuming workouts in July.

The girls’ workouts will resume  Monday, July 18 and continue each Monday through Thursday  through July 28. Daily sessions will be 9:00-10:00 a.m.

Volleyball will have two more sessions of sport-specific instruction  10:30-11:30 a.m. on Thursdays – July 14 and 21.
