Runners open CC season

The Albany Lions and Lady Lions opened their cross country season Wednesday, Aug. 31, at Haskell with 10 runners competing.

“The kids did so good,” coach Ginger Norton said. “I’m very proud of them.”

The runners returned to action Sept. 6 at the Eula meet. Results will be reported next week.

At Haskell, Albany had five boys in the varsity division. The Lions’ top three finishers were sophomores. Times for Albany runners were not reported.

JV pushes for last-minute TD

The Albany Lions junior varsity football team held on late to take an 18-13 victory over Dublin on Thursday, Sept. 1 at Robert Nail Memorial Stadium.

“Overall, it was a tough fight and a good win,” coach David Fairchild said.

The JV Lions (2-0) play their third consecutive home game to start the season on Thursday, Sept. 8 (tonight) when Seymour visits. The game, which is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m., will be the nightcap of a tripleheader with the junior high teams.

Tourney winners named

The team of Walker-Anderson successfully defended its title at the Albany Golf Club’s Labor Day Tournament, winning a competitive Championship Flight on Sunday, Sept. 4 at Albany Golf Course.

Walker-Anderson shot 130 over 36 holes, edging Waters-Holson by a stroke with Russell-Bodney another shot back in third place.

The two-person scramble drew 42 teams for the weekend, according to Albany Golf Club president Randy Walker.

Cubs open season with wins over Dublin

The Albany Junior High Cubs opened their 2022 football schedule Thursday, Sept. 1, with a pair of victories over Dublin at Robert Nail Memorial Stadium.

The seventh grade rallied to win 16-14, while the eighth grade led all the way in winning 32-8.

The junior high teams play at home again this week, taking on Seymour on Thursday, Sept. 8. The seventh grade game will start at 4:30 p.m. with the eighth grade to follow.

Witten’s team to play here this Saturday

Former Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten will visit Albany this weekend in his role as head football coach of Argyle Liberty Christian.

The Liberty Christian Warriors (1-1) will play the Lubbock Trinity Christian Lions (1-1) at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10 at Robert Nail Memorial Stadium.

The game will be the second of the season at Nail Stadium for Trinity Christian, which opened its schedule Aug. 26 against Albany.

Lady Lions bounce back, beat Woodson, Benjamin

The Albany Lady Lions volleyball team split its two matches last week, losing at Abilene Christian on Tuesday, Aug. 30 and sweeping Woodson on Saturday, Sept. 3 at home.

On Tuesday, Sept. 6, the Lady Lions (11-8) won 17-25, 28-26, 25-20, 25-16 at Benjamin. Details will be reported next week.

Albany will host Tolar on Saturday, Sept. 10, with JV2 starting at 10:00 a.m. JV1 and varsity will follow.

Albany controls Dublin in 55-14 win

The Albany Lions made sure their second outing of the season didn’t come down to the wire, riding a fast start to a 55-14 victory over the Dublin Lions on Friday, Sept. 2 at Dublin’s Cervetto Stadium.

Albany takes to the road for the second week in a row Friday, Sept. 9 to face the Seymour Panthers in a matchup of 2-0 teams.

At Dublin, Albany scored on five of six first-half possessions and needed just four minutes to take the lead for good.

Moran girls take 5-set win over Roscoe

The Moran Lady Bulldogs volleyball team won two matches last week, including a five-setter on the road.

The Lady Bulldogs visited Gustine on Tuesday, Aug. 30. Results will be reported next week. On Saturday, Sept. 3, Moran will host Rotan.

The Lady Bulldogs (4-8) started last week on Tuesday, Aug. 23 with a 25-16, 20-25, 20-25, 25-16, 15-6 win at Class 2A Roscoe.

“That gives us a lot of momentum and helps us build endurance,” Lady Bulldogs coach Jo Hise said. “We now have confidence that we can pull through in five sets and get a win.”

Bulldogs to host Baird

The Moran Bulldogs football team took its lumps against top-ranked Benjamin in its season opener Friday, Aug., 26, falling 78-6.

Tyler Waddell caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from Ellis Hise in the second quarter for Moran’s score.

The Bulldogs host Baird at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2 at Bulldog Field for their home opener.

At Benjamin, Moran fell behind 56-0 in the first quarter.

JV Lions hand Santo 46-6 loss

The Albany Lions junior varsity football team opened its season Thursday, Aug. 26 with a 46-6 victory over Santo at Robert Nail Memorial Stadium.

The JV Lions host Dublin at approximately 7:00 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1 (tonight), in their second outing of the season. The game will follow two junior high games, the first of which starts at 4:30 p.m.

Against Santo, Albany took advantage of five possessions starting in Santo territory. Brody Oliver passed for three touchdowns, and Breylon Billington ran for two.
