Lady Bulldogs lose district match

The Moran Lady Bulldogs suffered a pair of three-set losses last week as the schedule finally reached district play.

The Lady Bulldogs played their second district match Tuesday, Oct. 11 at Rising Star. Results will be reported next week.

On Saturday, Oct. 15, Moran visited Trent for a nondistrict match.

The Lady Bulldogs then lost to Abilene TLC 11-25, 10-25, 25-27 at home on Tuesday, Oct. 4.

“We came together in that last set and played ball like we know how to play ball,” coach Jo Hise said.

Bulldogs end with positive yardage

The Moran Bulldogs took some steps in the right direction Friday, Oct. 7 but fell 64-16 at Vernon Northside in their final nondistrct game.

The Bulldogs (0-7) have their open date this week before starting District 14-1A Division II play Friday, Oct. 21 at home against Valera Panther Creek.

Flag football teams continue play

The Albany NFL Flag Football League nears the halfway point of its season this week with just two teams sporting unblemished records after two weeks of play.

Week 3 games start at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, at the Albany High School track infield.

Week 2 saw competitive games with four of six contests decided by a touchdown or less.

The Cowboys lead the Kindergarten-First Grade Division and the Broncos sit atop the Fourth-Sixth Grade division, both at 2-0. All other teams have at least a tie.

JV bounces back with shutout

The Albany Lions junior varsity football team bounced back from a shutout loss with a shutout win, beating Cross Plains 32-0 on Thursday, Oct. 6 at Robert Nail Memorial Stadium.

The teams meet again Thursday, Oct. 13 (tonight) at Cross Plains in the regularly scheduled matchup. Last week’s game was hastily arranged when the schools were left without JV opponents against Miles and Roscoe.

Runners compete Oct. 12

The Albany Lions and Lady Lions cross country runners had their final tuneup before district last week at the Anson meet, and coach Ginger Norton is optimistic about having more than one regional qualifier.

The District 10-2A meet was held Wednesday, Oct. 12 at Anson with the top three teams and the top 10 individuals advancing. Results were not available at press time and will be reported next week.

Cubs defeat separate opponents

The Albany Junior High Cubs football teams returned from their open date with a pair of home victories over different opponents last week.

The Cubs return to action Thursday, Oct. 13 (tonight), at Cross Plains. The seventh grade kicks off at 4:30 p.m. with the eighth grade and junior varsity games to follow.

On Thursday, Oct. 6, the seventh grade Cubs held off Anson 22-14, while the eighth grade downed Miles 22-12.

Albany girls unbeaten in district

The Albany Lady Lions volleyball team overcame an injury to a key player last week to extend its winning streak to 10 matches and complete the first round of District 6-2A play unbeaten.

The Lady Lions (21-7 overall, 5-0 district) started the second half of district Tuesday, Oct. 11, with a 25-21, 25-23, 25-16 win over Bangs at home. Details will be reported next week.

Albany will have an open date Saturday, Oct. 15 before visiting Coleman on Tuesday, Oct. 18.

Lions to face Buffaloes in homecoming bout

The Albany Lions started District 6-2A Division II play off on a positive note, beating the Miles Bulldogs 49-18 on Friday, Oct. 7.

The Lions (4-2 overall, 1-0 district) make their second district outing at 7:00 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14 when Cross Plains visits Robert Nail Memorial Stadium for homecoming. A victory would all but clinch a playoff berth for Albany, which moved up to No. 8 in this week’s Class 2A Division II rankings.

MHS runners prepare for district

Moran had seven runners compete Wednesday, Sept. 28 at Rotan. The meet was the final tuneup before the District 13-1A meet on Wednesday, Oct. 12 at Eula.

Moran had five girls and two boys compete at Rotan.

“Everybody improved on their times,” Hise said. “This meet gave us a lot of practice. The kids know what to expect at district and understand the mental strength needed to get done what we need to do.”

Bulldogs to face Northside this Friday

The Moran Bulldogs encountered another rough night on offense Friday, Sept. 30 in a 52-0 loss to the Rochelle Hornets at Bulldog Field.

The Bulldogs (0-6) close out the nondistrict portion of their schedule at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7 at Vernon Northside before taking their open date.

Against 13th-ranked Rochelle (6-1), Moran was held to negative 17 total yards.

Rochelle led 14-0 at the end of the first quarter before erupting for 38 points in the second to end the game at halftime.
