Pinewood Derby planned Jan. 28

By Kathy Thomson Around a dozen local Cub Scouts are expected to compete in the annual Albany Pinewood Derby on Monday, Jan. 28, and the race will feature a couple of firsts for the local Scouts. Most notably, this will be the first time the Pinewood Derby will take place in the new Scout Hut.

Winter Formal nominees named

By Kathy Thomson Albany High School’s annual Winter Formal will be held this Saturday, Jan. 18 at the Whitney Theatre from 7:30 until 10:00 p.m.  Tickets are $12 individually prior to the event and $15 each at the door. Snacks and water will be available at the dance.

GED enrollment available Jan. 27

By Kathy Thomson Open registration for the next series of General Education Development (GED) classes in Albany is taking place this month, according to local instructor Kenzie Fairchild. “Open enrollment will be available on Monday nights in January only,” said Fairchild.

Tate speaks at Albany FCA meeting

Students can attend weekend camps

Bible study group meets Thursdays

A women’s Bible study and fellowship is underway at Matthews Memorial Presbyterian Church and is open to all women in the community, according to MMPC office manager Sandy Ingalls. The group meets on Thursday mornings from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall at MMPC.

The deadline to signup boys and girls for Little Dribblers basketball is next Wednesday, Jan. 22, and parents of children who are interested in playing this year need to turn in their paperwork soon. The league is open to local youth from eight years of age (as of Jan.

Filing starts Jan. 15 for local elections

By Kathy Thomson Local residents who want to run for city council, hospital district, or school board positions in the Saturday, May 2 election may begin filing the required paperwork on Wednesday, Jan. 15. Filing closes a month later on Friday, Feb. 14 at 5:00 p.m. There is no filing fee.
