Seven Albany High School students will travel to Haskell this Saturday, Jan. 25 for the annual Haskell UIL Pow Wow, an academic practice meet.

“A lot of our kids are involved in the stock show, but we have seven who will be able to attend, and they will make up 23 individual entries,” said Rick Davis, UIL coordinator. “Our next practice meet is on Feb. 22 in Stamford. I expect a much larger group for that meet.”

This year the Shackelford County Youth and Livestock Association’s annual show falls on the same weekend as the practice UIL contest, with cattle, rabbit, and poultry classes, as well as the premium auction all taking place on Saturday, Jan. 25. With the scheduling conflict, student numbers are down significantly from the 15 who competed last year or the 37 entered in 2018.

The next practice meet will be in Stamford on Saturday, Feb. 22, and the district meet will be held in Stamford on Monday, March 23.

“We have a lot of students returning who made it to the regional meet last year, so I am very optimistic about our students’ success this year,” said Davis.

The regional UIL academic meet is in Odessa on April 17-18.

Representing Albany in Haskell will be Addison Asher, Max Balliew, Sarah Cotter, Elia Hebel, Jaleigh Morales, Paige Picquet, and Tana Thompson.
