The four high school girls running cross country track this season ran at a meet in Seymour last week as they prepare for the district meet in two weeks.

The foursome was in Anson Oct. 14, with results to be reported next week.

The team will compete in Munday on Oct. 21, then return to Anson on Oct. 28 for the district meet.

Placing at Seymour on Oct. 7 were 12. Briley Tabor 15:24; 13. Brylee Moore 15:28; 20. Sidney Russell 16.11; and 25. Maci Hatchett 15.28.

The Ministerial Alliance will host students for the after-game fellowship following the Albany Lions’ homecoming football game this Friday, Oct. 16.

The “Fifth Quarter” event will be held at The Feed Store directly after the Ranger game.

The fellowship will end at 10:30 p.m., earlier than this year’s previous events.

The JV Lion football team picked up a commanding 56-12 win over a visiting JV team from Clyde last Thursday to improve to 5-0 for the season.

The Lions will travel to Ranger this week to play a Stephenville JV squad since Ranger does not have a JV this season. The kickoff is expected at 6:15 p.m. following the junior high game in Ranger.

“It was all Albany against Clyde last week,” coach David Fairchild said. “The guys dominated the game on both sides of the ball.”

Members of the Albany Golf Club attended the club’s annual business meeting at the municipal golf course on Saturday, Oct. 10 and then played in the Championship Tournament. 

Golf club member James Waters said the business meeting consisted of electing three new board members and recognition of a long-time club member.

During the meeting, Harold Cox was given a plaque and recognized for 30 years of service to the golf club.

The City of Moran is planning to hold a household trash collection event and a free tire and trash disposal event on Saturday, Oct. 24, at the old rodeo grounds, 900 Ground Street in Moran.

Moran city secretary Teresa King said this is for Moran and Albany residents only.

The grounds will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. for Moran residents and 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. for Albany citizens, or until the containers are full.

A separate container for metal will be provided.

The Albany senior citizen center received new donated cabinets and a range with stove to complete the center’s kitchenette. 

Shackelford County Senior Citizen Activity Center board president Tracy Sullivan said that Jim Nobles built and installed the cabinets, and the Closet Angels organization donated the new stove.

Now that the center has received these needed items, the next greatest need is monetary donations, Sullivan explained.

Nancy Smith Elementary School staff and students are acknowledging Dyslexia Awareness Month by wearing red each Thursday in October.

In addition, facts about dyslexia are being shared during morning announcements on Thursday mornings.

October is National Dyslexia Awareness Month and focuses to bring more attention and support to people with one of the most prevalent language-based learning disabilities.

Plans for Fandangle 2021 are soon to be discussed at the upcoming annual membership meeting for the Fort Griffin Fandangle Association.

Fandangle office manager Jamie Parsons said there seems to be a lot of excitement, with members ready to talk about the upcoming season after not having the 2020 show. 

The meeting will be held  at the Albany Visitors Center on  Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 6:00 p.m.

The Fandangle board of directors whose terms are up for election this year will be Cody Leech and Lanham Martin.

Processing of local tax statements is “on hold” until final information is received from Callahan County’s appraisal district office about property tax rates in the Moran ISD, according to Shackelford chief appraiser Clayton Snyder.

“The new truth in taxation laws have slowed the adoption of tax rates for some units,” said Snyder, “and as of Tuesday, we hadn’t gotten any information from Callahan County for Moran ISD.”

The local CAD’s original plan was to have a file delivered to the printer by Friday.

Albany stock show participants have been on the road the last few weeks exhibiting in Anson, Dallas, and Waco.

The State Fair of Texas youth stock show joined the Heart O’ Texas livestock show in Waco this year as a result of the pandemic social distancing rules.

Albany senior Hannah Snyder showed at the State Fair in Dallas on Sunday, Sept. 27 and took home first place in the heavy weight Hampshire class, then went on to claim the title of Champion Hampshire.
