Albany ISD administrators reviewed updates about the district’s Targeted Improvement Plan (TIP), as well as looking at possible changes in remote learning during a board meeting on Monday, Oct. 19.

AISD director of student services Leigh Lowe reported that the Targeted Improvement Plan, required by TEA because of last year’s overall “D” grade, had been ready to put into operation for last spring’s testing, but when schools went to remote learning because of -COVID, and STAAR tests were suspended, the requirement was extended another year.

“Our STAAR scores (from the previous year) were good, and our kids performed well, but the grade was based on growth, and we didn’t show enough,” said Lowe. “Now there’s a learning gap because of COVID, so this comes with a big challenge.”

She added that the TIP committee used most of the components from last year’s plan and added some improvements. The finalized plan will be presented at the November meeting.

Remote Learning

Superintendent Jonathan Scott told board members that districts now have the option of only offering remote learning on a case-by-case basis rather than being required to provide it to all students regardless of reason.

“Most parents don’t realize the amount of work it takes for just one remote learner,” said Scott. “There’s a lot involved, and some take advantage.”

He added that remote students are not performing as well as their in-the-classroom peers.

Other Business

•A softball field rental agreement with the City of Albany was tabled until the next meeting.

•A resolution was approved giving 4-H extracurricular status.
