8th graders defeat Eastland, 7th grade game ends in tie

The Albany Cubs hosted Eastland last Thursday, with the eighth graders picking up a win and the seventh grade game ending in a tie.

Albany will be at home again this Thursday (today) hosting Hawley. The seventh grade game will start at 4:30 p.m. followed by the eighth graders at 5:30 p.m. The JV Lions will host the Bearcats at about 6:45 p.m.

The eighth grade Cubs defeated Eastland 28-8 last week.

Lions struggle with tough opponents

Coach Denney Faith wasn’t necessarily pleased with the Lions’ 26-20 loss in Dublin last Friday, but he was happy with the way his team continued to fight to the end of the water-logged battle.

“I loved the way our kids fought,” he said afterwards. “You never feel good about a loss, but I have to feel good about the effort the kids gave.”

The Lions will be back at home this Friday to host the Eastland Mavericks in the third non-district bout of the season. Kickoff at Robert Nail Stadium is set for 7:30 p.m.

Girls win district opener

After opening the district race with a win on the road on Saturday, the Lady Lion volleyball team lost their second league game on Tuesday against the visiting Newcastle Lady Bobcats.

The District 6-2A race will continue Saturday in Hawley against the Lady Bearcats. JV games will start the action at 10:00 a.m., with the varsity teams taking the court at 12:00 noon.

Albany has a bye next Tuesday, returning to action on Saturday, Sept. 22 to host Moran.

Runners medal in Eula, Coleman

Albany runners have competed in their first two cross country meets of the season, with a couple of competitors medaling in the junior high boys division.

Isaiah Carrillo took eighth out of 106 runners at Eula with a time of 8:01 on the 1.2-mile course, then crossed the finish line in third place at Coleman with 13:45 on a two-mile run.

Cason Fairchild was eighth at Coleman with a time of 14:12.

Lady Cubs open season

The Lady Cubs opened the season at home on Monday, with the A teams splitting games with Abilene Christian Middle Schools.

The B team played Newcastle on Tuesday, but results were not available at press time.

Albany will host Hawley next Monday, Sept. 17 in two games starting at 4:30 p.m., then go to ACMS Tuesday, Sept. 18 for matches at 4:00 p.m.

The 7A girls beat ACMS in straight sets this week, 25-16, 25-13.

Jr. high football teams open with wins

The junior high football teams both started the season well last Thursday with wins over visiting Dublin teams.

The Cubs will host Eastland on Thursday (today) starting at 4:30 p.m. with the seventh grade game. The games were on the schedule to be played in Eastland on Thursday, but were moved this week to Albany.

The eighth grade Cubs defeated Dublin 30-0 in the season opener last week.

“The Cubs looked great dominating Dublin,” coach Richard Sullivan said. “It was a fantastic start and a building block for the team.”

Albany JV blanks Dublin 32-0

The JV Lions blanked the visiting Dublin -Lions, 32-0, in the home opener for Albany’s JV last Thursday at Robert Nail Stadium.

The team will be on the road this week in Eastland on Thursday (today). The Mavs are also hosting an opponent to play against their freshmen squad starting at 5:00 p.m., with the JV Lions following at about 6:30 p.m. 

The junior high games will be played in Albany to allow Eastland to play a freshman game at home.

The win over Dublin last week improved the JV to 2-0 for the season.

Bulldogs open with win over Rising Star

The Bulldogs and head coach, Harley Ethridge opened the season with a decisive 46-0 win in Rising Star on Friday, Sept. 7.

The junior high game tonight has been moved to Sidney, starting at 6:00 p.m.

Moran plays host to Sidney on Friday, Sept. 14, at Bulldog Stadium for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff in front of homecoming fans. 

“I was pleased with our first game,” said Ethridge. “The kids are smart, have been well coached in the past, and are eager to learn.”

The Bulldogs scored mostly on the ground, with only one passing TD.

Volleyball games reported

The junior high Lady Bulldogs played their first game of the year in Moran on Tuesday, taking on Strawn.

“The junior high girls were very excited about their first game,” said girls head coach Dakota Fowler.

Afterwards, the varsity volleyball team faced Strawn’s Lady Greyhounds.

Scores were not available at press time.

Flag football deadline set

Parents of boys and girls at Nancy Smith Elementary only have one more day to sign their children up to participate in the Albany NFL Flag Football league before tomorrow’s registration deadline.

Registration

The forms were sent home with students, and parents need to fill out the registration form and return it to the front desk of NSES by Friday, Sept. 7 along with the participation fee of $60 per child. 

“The fee covers insurance, shorts, jerseys, belts, field maintenance, refs, and trophies,” said league organizer Anthony Ceder.
