Red Ribbon Week set Oct. 23-27

Contests, prizes, and dress-up days will all be part of next week’s Red Ribbon Week at both Albany campuses.

The nationwide theme of the 2023 campaign is “Be Kind to Your Mind, Live Drug Free,” which will be observed locally on Oct. 23-27.

The campaign educates students and the general public about drug and alcohol abuse. It has been observed locally for 35 years.

Students at both campuses will be given small items to remind them aboutthedangersofdrugandalcohol use such as wrist bands, pencils, stickers, and ribbons.

Students are being urged to participate in dress-up days next week at both the elementary and secondary campuses.

Both campuses will also be conducting competition for prizes.

Dress-up Days The student council is in charge of the dress-up days at the junior/ senior high campus and will select winners for each day.

There will be separate winners at the secondary campus for students and teachers.

“We will decide daily winners in both student and teacher divisions, plus overall winners for the week for both divisions,” StuCo co-sponsor Jenny Scott said.

Awards will vary by campus. The daily dress-up themes at the secondary campus are: Monday – Pajama Day. Tuesday –Favorite Movie Character.

Wednesday – Color Wars (specific colors for each grade level).

Thursday – Anything But Backpacks Friday – Red Out (wear red head to toe).

Daily dress-up schedule for elementary: Monday – Pajama Day.

Tuesday – Crazy Hair and Socks Day.

Wednesday–DynamicDuoorTerrific Trio (dress as twins or triplets).

Thursday – Color Wars (specific colors for each grade level).

Friday – “Red Rally for Drug Free!” (Wear red from head to toe).

Poster Contest

Nancy Smith Elementary will conduct a poster contest during the week, with cash prizes for the top three winners in each of four categories.

The age categories include Pre-K, Head Start and kindergarten, first and second grades, third and fourth grades, and fifth and sixth grades.

First place will receive $25, followed by $15 for second, and $10 for third in each age category.

Posters should be made on a quarter or half-size sheet of poster board with the student’s name and grade on the back.

Entries must be turned in to the school office by Friday, Oct. 27 at 9:00 a.m., but can be submitted at any point during the week.

Door Decoration Contest

The secondary campus will host a door decorating contest by classroom based on students’ second period class.

The winners of the contest will receive a pizza party on Friday.

“Each second period class will have the week to decorate the door to their classroom with a drug-free theme,” counselor Brittney Harmon said. “The doors will be judged on Friday, Oct. 27 by an outside panel of judges.”

Harmon also said that she is providing short videos with activities for WIN time on Monday through Thursday for the secondary campus.

The Red Ribbon campaign, including supplies and prizes, is funded by the Albany Task Force.
