An Albany company vehicle and a local man were involved in an Interstate 20 accident near “Ranger Hill” in Eastland County that killed a Breckenridge man on Monday, Oct. 24 about 3:15 p.m.
Christopher Lawren Whitehead, 45, of Breckenridge was pronounced dead at the scene after the pickup he was driving hydroplaned on the wet roadway, crossed the median, and struck a truck and trailer.
Brandon Roysdon of Albany, who was a passenger in the pickup, was treated and released from Eastland Memorial Hospital.
It’s time to fall back! Daylight Savings Time comes to an end on Sunday, Nov. 3 at 2:00 a.m. Clocks should be set back an hour at that time.
Most of the United States reverts to standard time on the first Sunday in November. In the U.S., each time zone switches at a different time.
Through 2006, Daylight Saving Time in the U.S. ended a few days before Halloween, Oct. 31. Children’s pedestrian deaths were found to be four times higher on Halloween than on any other night of the year.

Beverly Rogers of Albany was once again honored as a top individual fundraiser and also as a member of one of the top fundraising teams at the Walk to End Alzheimer’s annual fundraiser held at Abilene’s Rose Park on Saturday, Sept. 14.
The Abilene event is sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Association-North Central Texas Chapter.
Rogers and fellow Team Albany team Randy Hayes were both given recognition awards during the chapter’s event wrap-up party held at Miguel’s Mex Tex Cafe in Abilene last Thursday, Oct. 24.

Shackelford County commissioners approved this year’s commitment to fund the county-wide contract with AirMedCare and decided to obtain a courthouse security assessment during their regular meeting on Monday, Oct. 28.
They also approved a resolution for a Hazard Mitigation Plan update.
Air Ambulance
The membership agreement with AirMedCare, the air ambulance network that serves Shackelford County, was ratified at an cost of $12,000 to the county.

Local veterans will be honored guests at the seventh annual Albany Study Club Veterans Day Luncheon on Thursday, Nov. 14, and committee chairman Tammy Glover wants to make sure that everyone notes that the event will be back at the Old Jail Art Center this year.
“We are having the luncheon at 12:00 noon on Nov. 14 in the big room at the Old Jail Art Center,” said Glover. “The luncheon is open to all local veterans and their spouses. Even if a veteran is now deceased, their surviving spouse is welcome to join us.”

There is still time to sign up for a special archival workshop at the Old Jail Art Center this coming Saturday, Nov. 2.
Participants will learn about “heirloom document preservation” and will have the chance to preserve one single-page piece such as a document, photo, or letter.
They will also take home supplies to work with two more items.
Erika Parker, Collections Manager at the Grace Museum of Abilene, will conduct the workshop.
A fee of $15 will be charged to OJAC members and $20 to non-members.
The deadline for The Albany News’ 13th annual holiday recipe section has been set for Nov. 14, with favorite recipes being solicited from Albany and Moran chefs and bakers, as well as former residents and family members.
“I’ve gotten several recipes, but I’m hoping that I’ll hear from more people very soon,” said News editor Melinda Lucas.

The 2019 “Red Ribbon Week” campaign wrapped up on Monday with a special secondary assembly about the dangers of vaping and drunk driving, and organizers were pleased with the district-wide participation.
“Red Ribbon Week went very well, with lots of participation,” said Albany elementary school counselor Susie Beard.
Poster winners were announced at the Nancy Smith Elementary campus on Monday morning.
The results of a new social media competition at the secondary level were announced at the pep rally on Friday.

A special assembly to honor local veterans will be held at Nancy Smith Elementary School cafeteria on Monday, Nov. 11 at 9:00 a.m.
“All local veterans and their families are invited,” said school administrative assistant Stephanie Gleitz. “They do not need to RSVP.”
The two Albany ISD campuses alternate hosting the event. This year it will be held at NSES and the elementary children will take part.
First through fourth grade classes will each perform a song under the direction of music teacher Robbin Guinn.
