Donations accepted for top Turkey Teacher

The Albany FCCLA chapter is seeking to dub one Albany secondary teacher or staff member a real turkey by the end of next week.

For a second year, the group is sponsoring a Turkey Teacher Contest, with students voting by donation for the teacher or staff member they would like to see wear a turkey costume all day on Tuesday, Nov. 22.

All the proceeds from the contest will be given to the Albany ResourceCare to use to purchase gifts for children in need for Christmas.

“We don’t decide how the money is used,” sponsor Jennifer Marshall said. “Last year, it was used to sponsor a senior student and buy new toys for younger children.”

ResourceCare will decide which of its Christmas programs needs the funds.

There are 20 teachers and staff members participating this year.

Donation jars are located in each participating teacher’s classroom or in the office for staff members. For each $1 donation a tail feather is placed on the staff member’s turkey located in the main hall of the high school building.

As of Tuesday, William Vaughan was leading with 93 feathers, followed by Chanel Hayner with 50, Rick Davis with 22, and Jennifer Everitt with 20.

Xavier Perez, AISD’s director of security, is a late addition to the 20-teacher roster, said Marshall.

Anyone can participate, so parents or community members can send their money with a student to participate.

The votes, or feathers, will be counted to determine a winner at the end of the school day on Friday, Nov. 18.
