Commissioners approve projects, policies

The Shackelford County Commissioners met on Dec. 23 to address various agenda items, including tax abatement guidelines, infrastructure improvements, and ongoing projects.

The court unanimously approved the Shackelford County Tax Abatement Guidelines for economic development. The guidelines aim to attract commercial investments by offering abatements for projects that bring at least $10 million in net economic benefits, create jobs, and avoid relocating employment within the county.

Commissioners also adopted a resolution recognizing and coordinating the dispatch of local volunteer fire departments and first responders. The resolution allows citizens to contact fire departments directly for emergencies and formalizes the dispatch system through the Sheriff’s telecommunications network.

In a discussion about the remaining American Rescue Plan Act funds, the court allocated $43,968.48 toward infrastructure projects. Most of the funds will be used to replace guywires and anchors on the county’s critical communication tower near One Mile Hill. Lone Star Tower Company, based in San Angelo, was selected for the project with a bid of $42,000. The project will include replacing six levels of guywires and anchors and ensuring the tower is plumbed and tensioned to factory specifications. The tower, essential for first responder dispatching and deputy communication, also leases space to Transworld Network for internet services. Any leftover funds will be directed to the Caldwell Bridge repair project.

During the elected officials’ report, Commissioners Cody Jordan, Lanham Martin, and Steve Riley highlighted ongoing roadwork, including blading roads, hauling materials, and mulching limbs. County constable Xavier Perez expressed gratitude for the department’s new vehicle, noting that a radio has been installed, and that graphics will soon be added.

The burn ban remains lifted, with no changes at this time.
