4-H Christmas party set Dec. 12

Shackelford County 4-H is staying busy right up until the holiday break with club members participating in or preparing for upcoming contests.
Club members Grace and Faith Fry took part in the NCHA Cutting Horse Judging Contest last weekend in Fort Worth.
Grace placed first individually with Faith finishing third.
“That was a big deal,” Shackelford County extension agent Kelsey Bell said. “The Fry sisters are part of an elite team, kind of along the same lines as kids who play travel ball. They have a West Texas region team with the horse judging coach (Kelly Riccitelli) from Texas Tech.”
Sheep and Goat Clinic
The Fry sisters, along with Leddie and Laithe Leech, conducted a clinic for sheep and goat exhibitors in preparation for next month’s Shackelford Youth and Livestock Show,
Bell said about 15 exhibitors attended the clinic, which was held Sunday, Dec. 4 at the county show barn.
“I was so proud of how organized the leaders were,” Bell said. “They had a plan for what they wanted to teach the kids, and the dads jumped in and helped as judges.”
Mock Food Challenge
Four teams of local 4-Hers took part in a mock Food Challenge on Saturday, Dec. 3, at The Feed Store.
“Kim Hill, Myra Hise, and Kelli Kreitler judged for us so the kids could have some real feedback,” Bell said. “They used the same judge’s scorecards and everything the judges will use at the contest.”
The practice contest was to help the teams prepare for the District 7 Food Challenge on Wednesday, Jan. 25 in San Angelo.
Cancellation
The Outdoor Education class scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 8 has been cancelled to avoid conflicting with Albany’s football playoff game, Bell said.
More Practice
A horse judging practice session is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. Monday, Dec. 12, at Dairy Queen.
Bell said it will be the first practice for club members in advance of the winter show season.
Christmas Party
The 4-H Christmas party will be held at 6:00 p.m. Monday, Dec. 12 at The Feed Store.
“The kids are going to do a White Elephant gift exchange and they’re not allowed to spend any money,” Bell said. “It needs to be a homemade gift or a regift or something like that.”
Club members are also asked to bring a newly purchased blanket to donate to ResourceCare.
