Jr. high teams sweep Anson games

The Albany Junior High Cubs and Lady Cubs basketball teams made a clean sweep of their games against Anson on Monday.

Playing at home, the seventh grade boys won 25-15 with the eighth grade boys winning 55-18.

In games played at Anson, the girls White team won 31-6 while the girls Red team won 25-17.

The games were the last before the holiday break. Albany will resume play on Thursday, Jan. 6, against Abilene Christian. The girls will be at home with the boys on the road.

8th Grade Boys

Albany had four players finish in double figures in the 55-18 eighth grade boys win. The Cubs scored at least 13 points in each quarter, leading 14-3 after the first and 27-6 at halftime.

“I thought we played well both offensively and defensively,” coach David Fairchild said.  “We did a good job controlling the boards.  Overall, it was a good outing.”

Huffman Heatly scored 13 points to lead the Cubs, followed by Lane Helle with 12 points, Mason McCloy with 11, and Cade Fairchild with 10. Brody Oliver had six and Tristan Howe two.

7th Grade Boys

The seventh grade boys pulled away from a 13-13 tie after three quarters with a 12-2 edge in the fourth. Albany overcame a slow start, pulling into a 9-9 halftime tie after trailing 3-1 after one period.

The Cubs enjoyed balanced scoring with Colter Edgar and Logan Balliew each putting up six points to lead the team. Jack Nail added five points with Zane Green scoring four and Connor Smith and Wesley Gleitz two apiece.

Girls Red Team

The girls Red team took a 14-9 hafltime lead on the strength of a 12-2 edge in the second quarter after trailing 4-2 at the end of the first period, then held on as Anson closed to within two points at 17-15 entering the fourth.

Braylee Clark led the Lady Cubs with eight points, while Kaisley Bartee and Mimi Ivy added six apiece. Zayne Lefevre scored four points and Madison Parrott recorded one point during the game.

Girls White Team

The Lady Cubs White team pitched a shutout in the first half, leading 15-0 after the first quarter and 25-0 at halftime. The margin grew to 31-1 after three quarters.

Amber Miramontes poured in 17 points, 15 in the first half, to lead the way. Ashlyn Miller scored eight points with Charlee Hefner adding four and Hattie Braly two.
