Students to compete at practice meet

Sixteen Albany students are travelling to Stamford for an academic invitational practice meet this Saturday, Feb. 23, and according to UIL coordinator Rick Davis, they could bring home several ribbons even though scheduling conflicts limited the number of students who could participate.

Gintert, McDonald wed Feb. 2

Jaymie Rae Gintert and Lawrence Mason McDonald were united in marriage on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2019 at the Springs Event Venue in Angleton, Texas. 

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Gintert of Pearland, Texas. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W.D. (Pete) McDonald of Rosharon, Texas. 

Mason’s grandparents were Bud and Elva (Daniell) Dillingham. Mason’s mother is the former Beverly Dillingham, 15th grandchild of Mollie Dillingham. Mason is one of 35 great-grandchildren of Ben and Mollie Dillingham. 

Fandangle practice to start after spring break

The Fandangle board of directors, including newly elected member Henry Musselman, met on Feb. 12, and plans for this year’s production are underway, although rehearsals will not begin until after spring break.

“I didn’t want to start practicing, and then be off for a week,” said artistic director Lorna Ayers. “We will have our first practice the Tuesday after spring break, March 19, at the Aztec. This will be for the full cast, everyone except the rolling stock.” 

Membership letters will be mailed on March 1.

Baseball league registration set Feb. 28

Registration forms for T-Ball, Coach Pitch, and Little League are available at local schools, and the signup deadline is next Thursday, Feb. 28.

Players that will be eight years old or older on Aug. 31, 2019 need to attend the Feb. 28 registration meeting at The Feed Store with their parents to sign up for Little League.

Holland places, makes sale at Ft. Worth stock show

Moran High School student JT Holland placed fifth in class 35 medium weight European cross steers at the Fort Worth Livestock Show earlier this month, earning a spot in the exhibition’s Sale of Champions.

Judge Chris Mullinix from Kansas placed Holland’s Simmental steer “Coon” in the top seven percent of the 70 animals in the class. 

Holland had already won the grand champion steer banner at the Shackelford County Youth and Livestock show with Coon on Feb. 2 before exhibiting the animal in the Fort Worth show the following week.

OJAC exhibits to open Feb. 26

Two new exhibitions open Tuesday, Feb. 26, at the Old Jail Art Center and will remain on display at the local museum until May 18. 

OJAC members who sent in their RSVP before the Feb. 18 deadline will be able to attend the artist’s reception and special members’ opening event this Saturday, Feb. 23 for an early viewing of the artwork.

Allied: The Tia and OJAC Collections, as well as the next installment in The Cell Series, titled Matthew Bourbon: Waiting for Now, are the featured exhibits.

Football field designation honors local coach

A unanimous vote by the Albany ISD board of trustees named the football field at Robert Nail Stadium “Faith Field,” surprising longtime Albany coach Denney Faith with the honor near the end of Monday’s regular meeting.

Board president Betsy Parsons presented the proposal, following up a suggestion made by Albany High School alumna Holly Harvick Cauble.

After the decision was made, Faith and his wife Angelyn were called to the meeting so he could be formally notified.

Chamber elects new directors

Several new directors were elected to the Albany Chamber of Commerce board at the organization’s annual membership meeting on Feb. 8.

Local residents who are new to the board are Chris Beard, Megaen Birdwell, Susan Montgomery, Jonathan Scott, Clayton Snyder, and Tracy Sullivan.

“We had a lot of interest in board positions this year, and we are thrilled,” said Chamber manager Mary Beth Jones. 

She added that several directors had asked to go off the board, at least for now.

Suggestions sought for student project

Three juniors at Albany High School are looking for ideas for an award worthy community service project and the funding needed to complete the task.

Taylor Scott, Tyler Beard, and Brayden Sullivan, along with mentor Chris Beard, each need to raise $150 to participate in the Texas Midwest Community Network (TMCN) training sessions and scholarship competition.

The TMCN scholarship contest has been held for several years, but this is the first time that Albany students have participated.

Chamber plans Funfest for local families March 7

The Albany Chamber of Commerce will host a Family Funfest for Chamber members, their families, and invited guests from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 7 at the Albany Golf Course.

“This is an appreciation dinner for current Chamber members,” said Chamber office manager Mary Beth Jones. “And we are encouraging them to invite others to join. We are trying to include more families, not just businesses, in the Chamber.”

Current Chamber members are encouraged to invite friends who might want to join the Chamber to attend the event with them.
