MMPC cancels Bazaar

The ladies of the Sallie Matthews Circle of Matthews Memorial Presbyterian Church announced this week that they will not host their annual Christmas Bazaar. 

The decision was based on the increase in the number of recent COVID-19 cases in the area and the fact that the hospitals in Abilene are reaching their threshold for COVID-positive patients. 

Friendship sets date for Harvest Acres

The date has been set for Friendship Baptist Church’s fourth annual “Harvest Acres.” 

The yearly event is always scheduled for the Saturday before Thanksgiving.  This year’s date is set for Saturday, Nov. 21, starting at 9:00 a.m.

Harvest Acres will be held in the church’s Activity Center located at 600 Greer Street. 

The bazaar will offer various craft items and Christmas decorations, as well as a silent auction.

Closet Angels celebrates 10 years

Closet Angels is cele-brating 10 years of being Matthews Memorial Presbyterian Church’s clothing ministry, with the purpose of helping those in need.

An idea that started on a whim in September 2010 by director Lori Reames has grown into a full-time operation, supporting not just the Albany community, but others both near and far.

Reames said Closet Angels (CA) began as an idea to start a coat drive.

Lions overcome slow start to beat Santo

The Lion varsity football team got a rough start in Santo last Thursday, allowing the Wildcats to go ahead by two touchdowns before rallying to earn a 34-14 victory in district play.

The Lions (7-1, 4-0) will face Cross Plains in the regular season finale that will determine the District 6-2A title and playoff berths.

The visiting Buffaloes are also sporting a 7-1 overall record and are 3-0 in district by virtue of a forfeit by Ranger last week.

Cross Plains will still have a make-up game to play against Meridian next week.

Albany to challenge Miles for area crown

The varsity Lady Lions volleyball team ended the regular season last Saturday with a win over Rising Star, and the girls are now preparing for the Class 2A playoffs.

Albany will play a rematch against Miles in the area playoff  round on Monday, Nov. 2 at Jim Ned High School in Tuscola. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. 

Cubs to play in Cross Plains today

The combined seventh and eighth grade Cubs hosted their final home game last week, sending Santo’s junior high home with a 33-6 loss.

The Cubs will combine again this week for the last game of the season in Cross Plains. Kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m. on Thursday.

The Cubs scored early with a 45-yard run by Ashton Bailey, who then kicked the PAT to put Albany ahead 7-0.

Branson Beal scored next on a 24-yard keeper for a touchdown, followed by another kick by Bailey for a 14-0 lead.

Basketball to start Saturday

The Lady Lion basketball team will start the season on Saturday in Coleman with scrimmages against the Lady Bluecats and Veribest.

The action will start at 9:00 a.m. against Coleman, followed by a 10:00 a.m. tip-off for the scrimmage with Veribest.

Another scrimmage is set for Monday, Nov. 2 in Cross Plains at 4:00 p.m.

Currently, the first game on the schedule is against Huckabay on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 2:00 p.m.

5th Quarter set at Feed Store

The last “Fifth Quarter” event of the 2020 season will be held at The Feed Store directly after the Cross Plains game this Friday, Oct. 30.

First Baptist Church will host the event for the students and will serve Subway sandwiches. Snacks and drinks also will be provided to the students.

According to Campbell Terry, FBC youth minister, this Fifth Quarter will end at 10:30 p.m., so non-driving students will need to be picked up on or before that time.

Moran PTO to host Trunk or Treat

The Moran PTO will sponsor Trunk or Treat on Friday, Oct. 30. 

The event will be held from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. in the front parking lot of the school. Everyone is invited to participate.

Moran ISD principal Jo Hise reported that the district is observing Red Ribbon Week this week.

JV Lions pick up game on Nov. 5

The JV Lion football team will play in Tuscola Thursday (today) against the Jim Ned JV with a 6:30 p.m. kickoff.

The JV was originally without a game this week since Cross Plains isn’t fielding a JV team, but the substitute game was arranged by coaches several days ago.

Fans will have to purchase tickets in advance at the Jim Ned website: jimned.esc14.net. Use the “tickets” in the main menu bar and chose the JV game to purchase online. All tickets are $5 each.
