Lions to host Peaster for homecoming

Despite racking up over 140 yards more in offense, the Lions were plagued by turnovers last Friday allowing the visiting Hawley Bearcats to slip by them 22-20 in a non-district contest.

Albany, now 2-2 on the season, hopes to turn around their mistakes when they host Peaster on Friday before a homecoming crowd at Robert Nail Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

Playing in their first varsity season, the Greyhounds are also 2-2 for the season.

AHS girls continue first round of district

The varsity Lady Lions suffered a district loss to Hawley on Saturday, but still hold a 2-1 mark in the first round of district action.

The Lady Lions traveled to Coleman on Tuesday for a non-district game, bringing home a 27-25, 25-18, 25-20, win. Details will be reported next week.

The District 6-2A race will continue on Saturday, with the Moran Lady Bulldogs coming to call. Game time is set for 10:00 a.m.

Jr. high girls split games in past week

The junior high volleyball teams split games last week, with the 8A team getting a win on the road in Newcastle and both seventh grade teams losing at home to Abilene Christian Schools.

The 7A team traveled to Moran on Tuesday, Sept. 24, but results were not available at press time. The other three junior high teams hosted Colorado City on Tuesday.

The 7A and 8A teams are scheduled to play in a tournament Saturday in Hawley starting at 8:00 a.m. for seventh grade and 9:00 a.m. for eighth.

5th Quarter to be held at Feed Store

Area churches are again taking turns hosting the successful and popular after-game fellowships following each of the Albany Lions’ home football games this year.

The third “Fifth Quarter” event of the season will be held this Friday, Sept. 27 at The Feed Store after the homecoming game with Peaster.

This Friday’s Fifth Quarter will be sponsored by the Albany Church of Christ, Maranatha Fellowship, and Jesus of Nazareth Catholic Church.

Jr. high football teams record wins

Both junior high football teams got back in the win column last week in Hawley, improving to 2-1 for the season.

The Cubs will travel to Peaster on Thursday (today) for games starting at 4:30 p.m. for the seventh grade. The eighth grade game will follow at about 5:45 p.m.

The seventh grade Cubs shut out Hawley 20-0 last week.

Dalton Richards scored all three touchdowns for the Cubs, the first on a 31-yard run that was followed by the two-point run by Ashton Bailey.

Charity K golf tournament slated this Friday

The 12th Annual Albany Kiwanis Charity/John Rose & Jim Law Memorial Golf Tournament and Fajita Fiesta will take place at the Albany Golf Course this Friday, Sept. 14.

Money raised from participants and sponsors will help fund the Albany K Charity Scholarship Fund.

The four-person scramble is $50 per golfer, with the fee to include a Fajita Fiesta meal provided by Albany Kiwanians on Friday before the start of the tournament.

FCA to sponsor cross country meet

Albany runners participated in a cross country meet in Baird on Wednesday, Sept. 25, but results weren’t available at press time and will be reported next week.

Local athletes will join about 10 other schools in an FCA-sponsored meet here in Albany next Wednesday, Oct. 2.

Paul Johnston, FCA’s Big Country East representative, said he is expecting somewhere around 10 teams per division, starting with the high school boys running at 2:30 p.m.

High school girls will run next, followed by junior high boys and then junior high girls.

JV beats Hawley to stay undefeated

The JV Lions edged out the Hawley Bearcats last Thursday, 16-14, to remain undefeated for the year with a 4-0 record.

The JV will host Clyde’s JV this Thursday (today) at 6:30 p.m. in Robert Nail Stadium.

The Lions’ first tally against Hawley last week came on a 16-yard run by Cole Chapman. Chapman hit Barrett Beal with the two-point pass.

The Lions’ second score came late in the fourth quarter after being down 14-8 with less than three minutes left on the clock.

LONNIE BUERGER

It is with great sadness that the family of Lonnie Robert Buerger announces his passing on Sept. 9, 2019 at the age of 70 years. 

Lonnie was born to parents Walter and Virginia Tucker Buerger on Feb. 22, 1949 in Gorman, Texas. He graduated from Levelland High School in Levelland, Texas. 

Lonnie enlisted in the United States Army from 1969 to 1975 and served with the Army’s Air Defense 4th Battalion 44th Artillery during the Vietnam War. 

Lonnie was a stalwart Christian and member of Crossroads Deaf Fellowship Church in Goliad, Texas. 

MARY HARGROVE

Mary Hargrove, 86, of Throckmorton, passed away Thursday, Sept. 19, 2019. Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 21st at the First Baptist Church in Throckmorton with Rev. Mike McKinney officiating. Interment followed in the Willow Cemetery in Haskell under the direction of Morehart Mortuary.

Mary Sue Lancaster was born Apr. 16, 1933 in the Roberts Community of Haskell County to parents, Ray Lancaster and Stella Bilderback Lancaster. After graduating high school, she married Gaylon Lavon Hargrove on Nov. 10, 1951 in Haskell.
