The varsity Lady Lions suffered a district loss to Hawley on Saturday, but still hold a 2-1 mark in the first round of district action.

The Lady Lions traveled to Coleman on Tuesday for a non-district game, bringing home a 27-25, 25-18, 25-20, win. Details will be reported next week.

The District 6-2A race will continue on Saturday, with the Moran Lady Bulldogs coming to call. Game time is set for 10:00 a.m.

Albany will host Woodson next Tuesday, Oct. 1 starting at 4:15 p.m. with the junior high, followed by the junior varsity at 5:00 p.m. and varsity at 6:00 p.m.

The Lady Lions earned a 25-21, 26-24, 25-14 victory in Newcastle Sept. 12.

“Our goal was to limit missed serves and the girls showed a lot of focus to achieve their goal,” coach M.J. Reneau said. “We had a couple of slow starts but finished strong to win in three. I was proud of the way the girls served, with a total of 31 kills.”

The coach thanked fans and the community in general for the support shown, especially at district matches.

“We love seeing the fans in the stands,” she said.

Albany hosted Hawley on Saturday, losing in three 25-20, 25-19, 25-21.

“Each set was close, but Hawley was able to pull it out in the end,” the coach said. “We served well and played good defense, coming from behind in each set and making it a good fight.”

Reneau said that she is seeing improvement in the team as the season progresses.

“We are looking forward to having another shot at them in the second round,” she said.

Hawley and Albany are the only actual 2A schools in the district and both are guaranteed a playoff spot. The remaining five teams are competing to advance in the 1A division during the playoffs.

JV Beats Hawley

JV Red handed Hawley a 25-16, 25-19 loss last week.

“The girls came out ready to win,” coach Jamie Wilson said. “I saw a lot of great hits at the net and our defense did a great job not letting the ball hit the floor.”

The JV White team also defeated the guests, winning 25-23, 25-19.

“The girls did a great job against Hawley,” Wilson said. “They came back from a seven-point deficit to win the first set. We had some great hustle and some good hits at the net.”
