Parents of local Little League, coach pitch, t-ball and softball league participants are asked to be aware of upcoming plans to take team and individual pictures of players.

“Because there are so many teams, we’re trying to schedule everything in a timely manner, and we’re certainly aware that not everyone will be at every game,” said Melinda Lucas of The Albany News. “We’ll just do the best we can, and try to get as many people there as possible.”

Lucas said that she will watch the weather and get word to the coaches about scheduling or changes.

Moran track and field athletes had a busy week with meets at the high school, junior high and elementary levels.

The high schoolers are making their final outing before the district meet Thursday, April 6 (today), at Hermleigh’s Wind Energy Relays. The District 13-1A meet will be held Thursday, April 13, at May.

On Thursday, March 30, Moran competed at the May Tiger Relays after a late change of plans.

Moran ISD is hosting Breakfast with the Easter Bunny at 7:50 a.m. Thursday, April 6 (today).

Following breakfast, students in Pre-K through third grade will have an Easter egg hunt on the football field.

Teams have been competing in meat judging, horse judging, and vet tech at contests around West Texas.

“At the Clarendon contest last week, the meat judging team scored as high as they ever did last year when I had Johnnie Hise and Hannah Rogers on the team,” Moran superintendent Dr. John Denson said.

Moran Volunteer Fire Department will conduct its annual Easter egg hunt at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 8 at the Moran city park.

Moran VFD assistant chief Gene Thompkins said between 2,000 and 3,000 candy eggs will be hidden for hunts to be held for three age groups, from preschool children to elementary and older.

New this year is a raffle for two Easter baskets, one for a boy and one for a girl. Tickets will be available at the event.

Thompkins said the event is open to those from outside the Moran community.

Jill Hamilton Cauble passed away April 4, 2023.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 8 at the family farm outside of Moran with Anthony Ceder officiating.

Dorothy Churchill, age 91 of Albany, passed away Friday, March 31, 2023. Graveside funeral services were held Wednesday, Apr. 5 at the Albany Cemetery with Pastor Paul Johnston officiating. Interment followed under the direction of Morehart Mortuary.

Dorothy Marie Benjamin was born May 3, 1931 in Rockford, Illinois to Cecil Clayton Benjamin and Catherine Ruth Foss Benjamin.

With sunny weather and spring temperatures in the forecast for this Saturday, April 1, families are invited to the Old Jail Art Center to explore the centuries-old spring tradition of Ukrainian Pysanky.

The three-hour come-and-go celebration, geared toward children of all ages, will begin at 1:00 p.m. and end at 4:00 p.m., with docents, junior docents, and other volunteers helping with activities.

Renovations are currently underway to transform the former Fort Griffin Restaurant and Beehive Saloon into a home for The Goodnight Steakhouse & Saloon, according to operating partner Michaela Smith.

The iconic “Beehive” closed in January after operating for 40 years in Albany, even prompting a second location in Abilene that is still in operation.

For a second consecutive year, the Albany High School band earned a pair of Division I ratings at the UIL Region 2 East Zone Concert and Sight Reading contest in Abilene on Tuesday, March 28 to earn the coveted Sweepstakes Award for the group.

Albany was given three Division I ratings in both concert and sight reading by the panel of three judges in each contest to clinch the award again this year.

A head-on collision near Lueders in the northwest part of Shackelford County on Tuesday morning about 7:25 a.m. left one man dead and another injured.

Names were not available at press time on Wednesday morning, but it was believed that the driver of a northbound pickup on FM 142 was on his way to work at a rock quarry when he hit a southbound Jeep pulling a trailer that was apparently stopped on a bridge.
