Moran ISD is hosting Breakfast with the Easter Bunny at 7:50 a.m. Thursday, April 6 (today).

Following breakfast, students in Pre-K through third grade will have an Easter egg hunt on the football field.

Teams have been competing in meat judging, horse judging, and vet tech at contests around West Texas.

“At the Clarendon contest last week, the meat judging team scored as high as they ever did last year when I had Johnnie Hise and Hannah Rogers on the team,” Moran superintendent Dr. John Denson said.

Commodity distribution delayed until April 13-14

Pick-up dates for the April distribution of the commodity food program will be Thursday, April 13 and Friday, April 14.

The date was pushed back from the usual first full week schedule because of the Easter weekend.

Certified eligible families in Moran should pick up their monthly commodity food at the Moran City Hall between 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 13.

Testing to start this month

Dates for state-required testing for both elementary and secondary students have been pushed back in the school year by about two weeks, with both STAAR and end-of-course (EOC) tests administered during April and May.

Spring hunting season underway

While the state-wide outlook for the spring turkey season is a little brighter than last year, prospects for Shackelford County are still down.

“It’s very poor,” game warden Jacob Mort said. “I know a lot of people are not allowing lease hunters to come. Lots of ranchers and hunters are not seeing the birds that historically Shackelford has had.”

The spring season for turkey in the north zone began Saturday, April 1  and runs through Sunday May 14. Two youth-only day remain – Saturday-Sunday, May 14-15.

4-H’ers place at district fashion show

Four junior members of Shackelford County 4-H competed in the District 7 Fashion Show, held Tuesday, March 28 at Llano.

“This contest is very diverse,” Shackelford County extension agent Kelsey Bell said. “There are a lot of different categories, a lot of events you can enter. All four of the juniors placed in multiple events.”

10 athletes qualify for regional tennis

The Albany Lions won three titles and advanced entries in all five draws last week at the District 10-2A tennis tournament, also winning the girls and boys team trophies as well as the overall team championship.

Albany will have six entries comprising 10 athletes at the Region II-2A tournament schedule for Monday-Tuesday, April 10-11, at the Richland Tennis Center in North Richland Hills.

Lions pitch back-to-back no-hitters

The Albany Lions had a big week on the mound and at the plate in sweeping District 8-2A baseball games against Haskell and Stamford, getting shortened no-hitters from Cole Chapman and Tyler Chapman in the run-rule victories.

Albany (12-2 overall, 4-1 district) reached the midway point of the district schedule in a three-way tie with Stamford and Hawley for first place. The Lions visited Cisco on Tuesday, April 4 to wrap up the first half of the district schedule, winning 4-0. Details will be reported next week.

District Champs!

The Albany Lions, led by individual medalist Ayden Balliew, made the shots they needed in 36 holes of the District 10-2A golf tournament, holding off Haskell by two shots for the team title and claiming the district championship for the second time in three years.

The win qualifies the Lions for the Region II-2A tournament for the third year in a row and puts the team two rounds away from a return to the state tournament. The regional tourney will be played Monday-Tuesday, April 17-18, at Old Brickyard Golf Course at Ferris.

District track meet set Thursday

The Albany Lions and Lady Lions track and field teams made their final outing before district on Thursday, March 30 at the Golden Shoes Relays in Clyde.

The District 10-2A meet is being held Thursday, April 6 (today), at Cisco. Results will be reported next week.

The top four finishers in each event at the district meet qualify for the area meet with District 9-2A on Friday, April 13 at Graham. A top-four finish at area earns a trip to the Region II-2A meet April 28-29 at Springtown.

7th grade boys earn team title at district track meet

The Albany Cubs seventh grade boys won the team title at the District 10-2A junior high track meet Saturday, April 1 at Hamlin.

The seventh grade boys scored in 12 of 17 events to total 146½ points and edge Anson for the title. The Cubs won four events, including a 1-2-3 sweep in the high jump, and medaled in all three relays. In all, Albany posted 15 top-three finishes.

Event winners were Aiden Vickers in both the high jump and pole vault, Clay Chapman in the long jump, and Jakobi Roberson in the triple jump.
