Sign-up deadline set Aug. 25

Moran’s annual garage sale is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 27, beginning at 7:00 a.m.

Community residents can register for the sale until 5:00 p.m. Thursday, Aug 25 on either the City of Moran or the Moran Buy, Sell, Trade Facebook pages.

“So far I have had nine people sign up,” organizer Michelle Taggart said. “We are cutting off sign-ups on Thursday so I have time to prep and print out the maps and lists.”

Residents can sign up at no cost.

Maps and lists for the sale will be distributed by Taggart at the Sale No. 1 site.

Bulldog roster increases to 8

The Moran Bulldogs football team enjoyed a productive outing in its first scrimmage on Thursday, Aug. 11.

“It went very well last week,” Bulldogs coach John Hughes said.

Moran scored eight times during its three-team workout with Trent and Brookesmith at Trent, while not allowing a score.

The Bulldogs get their final tuneup at 6:00 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18 (tonight) at Lueders-Avoca.

JAMES RUFF

James Ruff, age 97 of Breckenridge, passed away Thursday, Aug. 11, 2022. Graveside funeral service with military honors were held Monday, Aug. 15 in the Albany Cemetery. Interment followed under the direction of Morehart Mortuary.

James Allen Ruff was born April 18, 1925 in Albany, Texas to parents, James Houston Ruff and Eddith Dillingham Ruff. In 1943, James joined the United States Navy and served in World War II before his honorable discharge in 1946.

ALLAN DAVIS

Allan Davis, age 73 of Albany, passed away Saturday, Aug. 13, 2022. Graveside funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 20 in the Throckmorton Cemetery. Interment will follow under the direction of Morehart Mortuary.

Allan Douglas Davis was born January 5, 1949 in Haskell, Texas to Kenneth Davis and Oma Dorris Everett Davis. In his younger years, he worked in the oilfield, working on drilling rigs. Mr. Davis was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Dorris Davis; one sister, Barbara Egeland.

GEORGIE VANDIVERE

Georgie Elizabeth Vandivere, 92, of Albany passed away peacefully on Sunday, Aug. 7, 2022. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are being made by Bailey Howard Funeral Home of Clyde.

NANCY WEST

Nancy Moore West, 94, of Stamford passed away Monday Aug. 15, 2022 in Abilene. The family will welcome guests at 6:00 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 18 at Kinney-Underwood Funeral Home in Stamford.

A private family burial will be held in Spring Creek Cemetery. A memorial service will be held 11:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 19, in St. John’s United Methodist Church with Pastors Steve Patterson and Paul Wright officiating.

County employees address court

Shackelford County elected officials continued to work on the budget for the upcoming fiscal year, spending part of Monday afternoon going through the line items prepared by county treasurer Tammy Brown.

During a three-hour session that morning, the commissioners heard from several county employees who asked that funding from the American Rescue Plan Act be used to supplement workers’ pay.

Appointments now needed to register

Following a week of online enrollment and three in-person days for registration, school officials reported that over 90 percent of expected students have been registered for the new school year that starts next Wednesday, Aug. 17.

Overall enrollment for all grade levels stood at 461 at the end of the last in-person day for registration on Monday, leaving officials still looking for just under 30 more students to be officially signed up.

School details included in special section

Bios of new staff members, along with faculty assignments and school supply lists, are included in the special back-to-school section in this week’s issue.

There are also articles about vaccination requirements, elementary “meet the teacher” night, and orientation for new junior high and high school students.

Arrests made over weekend

Local law enforcement officers had an unexpectedly busy weekend Aug. 5-8 with several DWI arrests and two ongoing cases that called for assistance from the Texas Rangers.

According to Shackelford County sheriff Ed Miller, there were two one-car accidents in separate locations involving the same vehicle, with the first incident occurring near Albany Food Mart around 2:30 a.m. Sunday. A northbound car failed to make the turn, jumped the curb, and eventually hit the dumpster next to the convenience store.
