Local law enforcement officers had an unexpectedly busy weekend Aug. 5-8 with several DWI arrests and two ongoing cases that called for assistance from the Texas Rangers.

According to Shackelford County sheriff Ed Miller, there were two one-car accidents in separate locations involving the same vehicle, with the first incident occurring near Albany Food Mart around 2:30 a.m. Sunday. A northbound car failed to make the turn, jumped the curb, and eventually hit the dumpster next to the convenience store.

The accident was reported by a witness, but the vehicle left the scene before a deputy could arrive. A couple of hours later, the same car and its occupant, a foreign national who was subsequently arrested, was found at another crash site on Hwy. 283N, Miller said.

DWI arrests were made earlier that same evening and on Friday night, both incidents involving foreign nationals and both occurring west of Albany.

Miller and other officers responded to a report Saturday night of a sexual assault in the Lueders area.

On Monday, a situation involving sexual assault of a child was reported.

Investigations are ongoing in both cases, Miller said, and the Texas Rangers are assisting, but no arrests had been made as of press time on Tuesday.
