The Moran Lady Bulldogs picked up their second District 13-1A victory last week to split two home games.

The Lady Bulldogs lost 68-26 to Eula on Tuesday, Jan. 18, but held off Rising Star 42-38 on Friday, Jan. 21.

Meanwhile, the Moran boys team lost 86-30 to Eula, then fell agonizingly short in a 47-45 loss to Rising Star.

The Bulldogs played at Cross Plains on Monday, Jan. 24 in a game postponed from Friday, Jan. 14. Results were not available at press time and will be reported next week.

Albany’s youth basketball teams have faced scheduling issues through the first three weeks of their season, but competition is ongoing.

Teams of fifth and sixth graders have played two weekends, but games on Saturday, Jan. 15 were cancelled and likely will not be made up, according to league organizers.

Albany’s sixth grade girls team, which has just six players, has yet to play a game because of illness.

The sixth grade boys and fifth grade boys and girls have each played two weekends.

The Albany Junior High Cubs and Lady Cubs basketball teams had a busy week with games on Thursday, Jan 20, against Hawley and Monday, Jan. 24 against Haskell.

The seventh and eighth grade boys teams will compete in the Breckenridge tournament on Saturday, Jan. 29, while the girls will send one team to the Guthrie tournament.

The junior high teams will close out their schedules against Stamford on Monday, Jan. 31. The girls teams will be at home with the boys on the road.

Eighth Grade Boys

Seven members of the Albany Lions football team received recognition on the All-Big Country Preps football team after helping Albany advance to the Class 2A Division II state semifinals.

Running back Jaheim Newton, offensive lineman Zane Waggoner, and defensive lineman Taren Farmer were all named to the website’s second team. Quarterback Cole Chapman, offensive lineman Monte Cauble, and linebacker Brooks Neece were honorable mention.

The Albany Lady Lions opened the second half of District 10-2A play with 71-29 home loss to Haskell on Tuesday, Jan. 18, before taking its second bye of the district schedule.

Albany visited Hawley on Tuesday, Jan. 25, to start the closing stretch of the season. The girls lost 45-36, with complete results to be reported next week.

The Lady Lions host Hamlin on Friday, Jan. 28.

Against Haskell, Lady Lions coach Tate Thompson said Albany showed improvement from its first meeting with the Maidens, an 89-21 loss at Haskell on Dec. 14.

The Albany Lions basketball team put together another solid performance in its only outing last week to get back to .500 in District 10-2A play, at least temporarily.

On Tuesday, Jan. 18, Albany defeated Haskell 54-26 to wrap up the first half of district before taking an open date.

“I thought we were more aggressive and wanted to play a little bit harder,” Lions coach Ryder Peacock said. “We got some more offensive  rebounds.”

The Moran Lady Bulldogs basketball teampicked up its first District 13-1A victory last week, beating Baird 36-18 on Tuesday, Jan. 11, before falling to Cross Plains 76-17 on Friday, Jan. 14.

Moran (6-14 overall, 1-2 district) hosted Eula on Tuesday, Jan. 18. Results will be reported next week.

Girls Results

The Lady Bulldogs will play Rising Star on Friday, Jan. 21, in a game switched to Moran to accommodate Moran’s participation in the Shackelford County livestock show. The return game on Feb. 8 will now be played at Rising Star.

Registration is ongoing for the upcoming youth baseball and softball seasons season with information available at Nancy Smith Elementary School.

Albany Little League

Albany Little League organizer Paul Hamilton said the baseball program is shifting to online registration this year, but information on how to register will be available through the school.

The registration deadline for T-Ball, Coach Pitch, Little League Majors and Minors, Intermediate, and Junior leagues will be in mid-February, Hamilton said.

The Albany junior high basketball teams faced schedule changes that resulted in no games being played since their last outings on Monday, Jan. 10.

The junior high boys teams were forced to withdraw from the Olney Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 15, when that event was rescheduled for Saturday, Jan. 29. The Cubs are entered in the Breckenridge tournament on that date.

Games scheduled for Monday, Jan. 17 against Hawley were rescheduled for Thursday, Jan. 20 (tonight) because of the Martin Luther King holiday.

The Albany Lady Lions lost their two games last week to conclude the first round of the District 10-2A schedule, but coach Tate Thompson said the team had flashes of good play.

The Lady Lions dropped a 66-28 decision at Anson on Tuesday, Jan. 11, before falling 66-15 to Stamford on Friday, Jan. 14 at home. Albany was victimized by hot shooting in both games as Anson hit 13 3-pointers and Stamford made six treys.
