Aztec musical this Saturday to feature “Seasons of Love”

The Aztec Theater is hosting a night of music performed by local residents entitled “Seasons of Love” on Saturday, Nov. 19, with all proceeds benefiting the venue.

Tickets will only be available at the door for $15, payable by cash or check. Credit cards will not be accepted.

The show will start at 7:30 p.m. with Pam Davis narrating.

Organizer Sandy Abel said about a dozen local singers – most of whom have participated in previous fundraising events – will sing a variety of songs with a love theme.

Council okays property purchase

Albany city council members approved a petition from the city’s Economic Development Corporation (EDC) to purchase just under 14 acres of property on the east side of the community during an hour-long monthly session on Monday, Nov. 14.

The council also agreed to lease the last existing space for a hangar at the airport and set new speed limit restrictions for the Clarke Estates and the east end of South First Street.

Coach Ken Patterson, age 86, was freed from everything that hinders on Wednesday morning, Nov. 9, 2022, having run the race with perseverance and having fixed his eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of faith. (Hebrews 12:1-2)

He was born in Roby, Texas to Joseph and Renvie (Floyd) Patterson, grew up in Munday, Texas, and graduated from Howard Payne University, where he met and married Judy Lind Bell of Stephenville on May 12, 1962. She preceded him in death.

Only 1 COVID case reported last week

Only one new COVID-19 case was reported last week, as the number of local cases continues to remain low based on information provided by Albany’s two health clinics.

The weekly report by county judge Bob Skelton issued Tuesday reported one positive test result out of nine tests administered at the two local clinics for the period of Oct. 31 through Nov. 4.

There were four positive cases out of 12 tests for the week of Oct. 17-21.

Flag football action to end with Super Bowl at stadium Nov. 12

The Albany NFL Flag Football League had to adjust its schedule after Week 5 games were postponed because of inclement weather but finished the regular season in time to conduct its Super Bowl this weekend.

Heavy rains forced games scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 29 to be delayed. That left the league playing catchup with Week 5 games on Saturday, Nov. 5 and Week 6 games on Monday, Nov.7 and Tuesday, Nov. 8.

Regular season games were played at the Albany High School practice field.

Moran basketball schedule changes

Moran Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs basketball teams are already encountering schedule changes before the season even tips off.

Moran athletic director John Hughes said junior high games scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 10 (tonight) at Cross Plains have been cancelled because of the Buffaloes’ playoff football game at Big Spring.

Also, the Lady Bulldogs varsity game scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 12 at Loraine has been cancelled after Loraine cancelled its season.

“I’m trying to find a game for the girls,” Hughes said on Tuesday.

Veterans Day program, Thanksgiving meal set

Moran ISD will conduct its Veterans Day program at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 10 (today) at the school gymnasium.

Members of American Legion Post 423 in Cross Plains will make a flag presentation, students from sixth grade, kindergarten and Pre-K will sing, and Moran graduate Jeff Martin will perform as the school recognizes veterans from the community.

Thanksgiving Meal

Moran will serve its Thanksgiving meal Wednesday, Nov. 16.

The event is open to all community members.

Murk, Henderson honored

Moran made a handful of special presentations Thursday, Oct. 27 at its final home football game of the season.

In addition to senior Tyler Waddell being recognized with Senior Night ceremonies, senior Emily Murk was named Football Sweetheart, and junior Zech Henderson was named Pep Squad Beau.

The pair was recognized at halftime of the Bulldogs’ game against Paint Rock.

“The Football Sweetheart was voted on by all the football boys, and the Pep Squad Beau was voted on by the cheerleaders,” Moran principal Jo Hise said.

Lady Bulldogs earn historic bi-district title

The Moran Lady Bulldogs made history last week before bowing out of the Class 1A volleyball playoffs.

Moran defeated Three Way 25-18, 25-18, 25-22 on Tuesday, Nov. 1 in a bi-district match at Dublin. It was the first bi-district title  in program history and the first playoff win for the school in any team sport since a 70-46 bi-district football victory over Valera Panther Creek in 2017.

Cubs finish with big wins

The Albany Junior High Cubs closed out their football season Thursday, Nov. 3 with a pair of shutout victories over Abilene Texas Leadership Charter Academy at Robert Nail Memorial Stadium.

The seventh grade Cubs finished off a 9-0 campaign with a 46-0 victory. The eighth grade won 31-0 to end the season at 6-2-1.

Bennett Neece, Clay Chapman, and Jakobi Roberson each scored two touchdowns as the Cubs scored six different ways.
