Stanton Dow Liles, III, was born Sept. 13, 1946, in Seymour, TX, and passed from this life on Oct. 8, 2021, in Wichita Falls, TX. A graveside service was held at the Throckmorton Cemetery Tuesday, Oct. 12, followed by a memorial service at First United Methodist Church, Throckmorton, TX, with Rev. Jay Gage officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Smith Family Funeral Homes, Throckmorton.

Lady Bulldogs pick up 3rd district win

The Moran Lady Bulldogs picked up their third victory in District 6-2A volleyball on Sept. 28, defeating Abilene TLC 25-16, 25-10, 25-15.

Moran had an open date on Saturday. The Lady Bulldogs were scheduled to host Newcastle on Tuesday and will visit Albany Saturday.

In the first set against TLC, Vivi Green served for five points to lead Moran. Alli Scott had seven points in the second set, with Hannah Rogers adding five, including three aces. In the third set, Johnnie Hise served for nine points and Emily Murk for seven.

Flag football underway after delay

The Albany NFL Flag Football League got off to a belated start Tuesday with more than 100 elementary students participating on 12 teams in three age divisions.

League organizer Anthony Ceder said the goal of the program is to provide a positive, Christian experience for participants and instill a sense of community unity.

“Football is such a big destination point sports-wise in Albany,” Ceder said. “We want to get them participating and doing what they will eventually do as they progress through sports.”

7th graders defeat Ranger, Lady Cubs to play Oct. 12

The Albany Lady Cubs seventh grade volleyball team scored a two-set victory at Ranger on Sept. 28 in the only junior high match of the week.

The Lady Cubs won 25-12, 28-26.

Charlee Hefner served for seven points in the first set with Zayne Lefevre serving for six. The duo was followed by Ashlyn Miller and Amber Miramontes with three points apiece, while Hattie Braly and Tatum Grady each served for two.

Kiwanis tourney full

The 14th annual John Rose & Jim Law Memorial Albany Kiwanis Charity Golf Tournament and Fajita Fiesta is expected  to have a full field for its makeup date of Friday,  Oct. 15.

Kiwanian Zach Maberry said 12 teams are entered with none withdrawing after the event was postponed last week.

The tournament raises funds for the Albany K Charity Scholarship Fund as well as a number of other local projects.

The Fajita Fiesta is scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m. with the four-person scramble having a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m.

JV Lions stay undefeated at 6-0

Lute Wheeler passed for  four touchdowns and Branson Beal scored three times last Thursday as the Albany Lions junior varsity football team defeated Olney 42-0 at Olney.

The Lions JV (6-0) has won for the third consecutive week on the road.

Ashton Bailey opened the scoring with a 12-yard run on Albany’s first possession. The score was set up when Cason Fairchild pulled in a 33-yard pass from Wheeler on the Lions’ first play.

Bailey was also six of six on PAT kicks.

Golf Club meeting set Saturday

The Albany Golf Club will conduct its annual membership meeting Saturday at the municipal golf course with the opening round of the club championship to tee off right after.

A brisket lunch is scheduled for noon Saturday with the meeting to start by 12:30 p.m.

Golf Club board member James Waters said two board positions will be voted on at the meeting.

“Both incumbent board members, Charles Barrett and Bucky Nail, have agreed to run again,” Waters said. “Once we get in the meeting, members can also nominate other people who want to run.”

Abbreviated games end in wins

The Albany Junior High Cubs football teams made the most of limited opportunities last Thursday in recording a pair of victories at Olney.

Both seventh grade and eighth grade games were played with a running clock because of the threat of bad weather.

The seventh grade Cubs won 14-6, scoring on two of three possessions. The eighth grade won 8-0 despite running just nine offensive plays.

CC district to be run Oct. 13

The Albany High School and Junior High cross country athletes will compete at the District 10-2A meet Wednesday, Oct. 13 at the Anson Golf Course.

The Albany runners got a preview of the course Wednesday, Oct. 6 at the Anson Invitational. Results will be reported next week.

The district meet will start at 2:30 p.m. with the varsity boys, a three-mile race. The varsity girls will run two miles starting at 3:00 p.m.
