Lute Wheeler passed for  four touchdowns and Branson Beal scored three times last Thursday as the Albany Lions junior varsity football team defeated Olney 42-0 at Olney.

The Lions JV (6-0) has won for the third consecutive week on the road.

Ashton Bailey opened the scoring with a 12-yard run on Albany’s first possession. The score was set up when Cason Fairchild pulled in a 33-yard pass from Wheeler on the Lions’ first play.

Bailey was also six of six on PAT kicks.

Beal scored his first touchdown on a 64-yard run then caught a pass from Wheeler as Albany pushed the lead to 21-0.

Wheeler and Fairchild hooked up for a 35-yard score, then Bryson Herring caught a 45-yard touchdown pass.

Wheeler hit another 45-yarder to Beal for the last touchdown.

“I was very pleased offensively,” coach David Fairchild said. “Lute had a good night passing, and our receivers Cason, Bryson, and Branson all played well.  Our backs ran well.”

The shutout was the second in a row for the Albany defense, which has allowed just three touchdowns this season.

“Defensively, I was very pleased,” the coach said. “Ethan Green had a great night leading the team in tackles, and Wyatt Beard, Beal, and Houston Heatly also turned in good efforts.”

Meridian is not fielding a JV this season and local coaches weren’t able to find another game for Thursday night.

Head coach Denney Faith said the JV players will suit up for Friday’s varsity game at Meridian.

Faith added that efforts are ongoing to find a game for  Oct. 21 to make up for the cancellation against Hamlin on Sept. 9.
