Neva Hall, age 88 of Roby, passed away, Thursday, March 4, 2021. A private funeral service for family only will be held at Belvieu Cemetery in Rotan. Services have been entrusted to Morehart Mortuary.

Neva Joyce Rogers was born on April 26, 1932 in Jayton, Texas to parents, Leslie Rogers and Lea Honor Kidd Rogers. She was raised in Peacock, Texas, where her family farmed cotton. 

MARIE JOHNSTON

Marie English Johnston, 94, passed away on March 4, 2021, in Ft. Worth, TX. Marie was the last child to be raised in Shackelford County’s Sedwick community. Though she traveled extensively, she spent most of her life in Houston, Austin, and Abilene before moving to Ft. Worth.

Marie was born on Christmas Eve, 1926. She was the oldest daughter of Naomi Criswell English and William Lucas (Bill) English of Sedwick. 

Lady Bulldogs earn all-district

The Moran varsity girls basketball team had six members recognized with honors in District 13 - 1A.

Sophomore Hannah Noble received second team All-District, and sophomores Alli Scott and Emily Murk received Honorable Mention.

Senior Dariann Hawley and junior Hannah Rogers received Honorable Mention and Academic All-District.

Junior Johnnie Hise received Academic All-District. 

Moran boys varsity basketball honors have not been announced as there is a district basketball team still in the playoffs.

Last week was National FFA Week, and members of the Moran High School FFA hosted a hamburger lunch last Wednesday, Feb. 24.

The officers sent out letters inviting local farmers to the meal in appreciation for the work they do in the community. 

Moran FFA officers are Cotten Campbell – sentinel, Ellis Hise – treasurer, Aydan Moreno – secretary, Johnnie Hise – president, and Hannah Rogers – vice president. 

Lady Lions gain valuable experience

The Lady Lion softball team won only one out of six tournament games last week in Eastland, but they gained much-needed experience that was even more important than a string of wins, according to coach Jimmy Fuentes.

Albany played a rematch with Cooper High School’s JV on Tuesday in Abilene, posting a 13-8 loss. Details will be reported next week.

Little Dribbler photos arrive

Color photo packets of the youth basketball and Little Dribbler teams, taken by The Albany News, are ready for pickup this week at the News office

In addition, a number of packages from previous sports have not yet been claimed.

The Albany High School softball team and individual pictures are scheduled to be taken in the next couple of weeks and should be ready by the end of March.

Youth packages are priced at $20 plus tax, while the cost of school sports packages is $25 plus tax.

Estridge powerlifting send-off set March 11

Albany High School senior athlete Wesley Estridge has powered his way to the top of Region 6, Division 3 Single Heavy Weight Powerlifting, and is set to compete in Alvord on Friday, March 12.

The powerlifter currently is sitting at third in the state with his heaviest weight in Squat at 775 pounds, in Bench Press at 405 pounds, and in Dead Lift at 500 pounds for a total of 1,680 pounds. 

A send-off for Estridge will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 11.

Lions lose to Lipan in area basketball playoff

The Lion basketball team’s season came to an end last Tuesday with area-round playoff loss to the Lipan Indians, 75-46.

Albany finished the season in second place in District 10-2A and defeated Petrolia in the bi-district game, 57-55. The Lions were 11-7 for the season and 9-3 in district action.

Lipan advanced to the regional semifinal this week, beating Wolfe City, 49-39, to set up a regional final bout versus  Cisco set for today.

Athletic Boosters need volunteers

The Albany Athletic Booster Club is making plans for upcoming fundraisers during the month of March.

AABC will host the concession stand for three upcoming track meets scheduled in Albany. 

A junior high track meet is scheduled for Monday, March 8, and the district junior high track meet will be held on Saturday, March 27.

Albany will host the high school district track meet on Wednesday, March 31.

Albany tennis team gets 2021 spring season underway

Members of the Albany High School tennis team were on the court last week in Hawley, with several girls participating in singles and doubles.

Local players hosted Baird and Throckmorton on Monday, March 1, but results weren’t available at press time. They will be reported next week.

“The Albany girls had a good day at the Hawley tournament,” said coach Sara Wilson. “We should have several players do well this season.”

Albany will host another tri-meet at the AHS courts next Tuesday, March 9, starting at 2:00 p.m.
