Albany tennis team gets 2021 spring season underway

Members of the Albany High School tennis team were on the court last week in Hawley, with several girls participating in singles and doubles.

Local players hosted Baird and Throckmorton on Monday, March 1, but results weren’t available at press time. They will be reported next week.

“The Albany girls had a good day at the Hawley tournament,” said coach Sara Wilson. “We should have several players do well this season.”

Albany will host another tri-meet at the AHS courts next Tuesday, March 9, starting at 2:00 p.m.

Results from Hawley are as follows:

Girls Singles

Sarah Cotter had a bye in the first round; defeated Sanchez of Ballinger 6-0, 6-0;defeated Hessman of Clyde in the semifinals 6-0, 6-1; then defeated Sidney Russell of Albany 6-0, 6-1 in the finals for the championship.

Sidney Russell defeated Harper of Breckenridge 6-0, 6-0; defeated Harper of Jim Ned 6-0, 6-1; defeated Rule of Hawley 6-0, 7-5 in the semifinals; then lost to Cotter in the finals.

Girls Doubles

Jaci Chapman and Chloe Daugherty defeated Mendez/Carthorne of Grape Creek 6-0, 6-0; lost to Beard/Little of ACHS 6-1, 6-3.

Susie Cormack and Ella Webb defeated Reneau/Cardenas of Hawley 6-0, 6-0; defeated Drennan/Kaleigh of Baird 6-0, 6-0; lost to Newton/Parrott of Hawley 6-4, 6-4 in the semifinals; defeated Beard/Little of ACHS 6-3, 7-5 for third place.
