Homecoming parade planned

Local groups and exes are invited to join the parade for the Albany High School homecoming celebration this year. 

Albany Junior/Senior High School will have class floats and a parade on Friday, Oct. 12 at 5:00 p.m.

The parade is open to everyone; however, all individuals, organizations, or class groups that would like to have an entry in the parade need to contact principal Edward Morales at 325-762-3974 to reserve a spot in the lineup.

Local church to host ‘The Patch’

Hundreds of pumpkins, a petting zoo, games, children’s activities, a concession stand, and a fall bake sale are just some of the things that will be available at “The Patch” located in the Bank Park this weekend, hosted by Bethel Assembly. 

Greenhands attend camp

Thirty Albany FFA Greenhands (members who are enrolled in their first year of high school ag science), advisor Chris Beard, chapter officers Madison Wilkins and Cutter Edgar, and district officer Seth Hale all attended the FFA Greenhand Camp held in Abilene at the Taylor County Expo Center last week.

“Our Greenhands got to meet and greet other Greenhands from the Big Country area,” said Beard. “It was a big success, and there were about 700 students participating on each of the two days.”

Volunteers to teach fire safety

National Fire Prevention Week will be observed on Oct. 7-13 this year, and local volunteer firefighters are reminding citizens to fly their flags at half staff on Oct. 7.

The VFD is planning to hold fun educational activities in local schools the following week, after all Homecoming activities are over.

“We will be at Nancy Smith Elementary School on Friday, Oct. 19, at 9:00 a.m.,” said fire chief Kyle Tischler. “I am still trying to get a time firmed up to be in Moran.”

Siren test set Oct. 10

The next regular test of the local emergency siren is scheduled for 12:00 noon, on Wednesday, Oct. 10, depending on the weather. 

The regular trial is scheduled for the second Wednesday of every month, but the siren is not tested if the weather is questionable.

The siren should sound one or more of the three emergency tones during the test.

Students to get Monday holiday

Albany students will enjoy a break from classes on Columbus Day, Monday, Oct. 8, as teachers and support staff participate in staff development.

The session about reporting data for student progress will be held for all staff in the Nancy Smith Elementary School cafeteria, and will be conducted by Region 14 personnel.

Classes will resume for all AISD students on Tuesday, Oct. 9 at the normal 7:55 a.m. time for the start of the school day for both campuses.

The second six weeks period is already underway and ends on Nov. 9.

Feed Store plans weekend parties

The staff at The Feed Store have planned a couple of high school student parties to take place this weekend since the Albany varsity Lions have a bye this week.

“Friday night will be for the guys,” said youth minister Levi Herron. “We’ll cook out, play some video games, and play some recreational games.”

The party will start at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 5, and will end by 7:00 a.m. the following morning, Oct. 6.

“There won’t be any sleeping!” Herron said. “We’re planning on pulling an all-nighter.”

The girls’ party will be on Saturday, Oct. 6.

Champions named in 4th BBQ cook-off

The fourth annual Fort Griffin BBQ Cook-off “Battle for the Blade & World Championship Dove Competition” took place last weekend and winners were declared in several categories, as well as the overall champion Clinton Ullmann. 

The Burnet resident, who headed up the team known as Double U BBQ, was presented with the 2018 fourth generation “Blade of Fort Griffin” on Saturday afternoon after all the judging was completed.

Local sorority offers raffles

One lucky raffle ticket holder will win a $500 gift card to the bed and breakfast or hotel of their choice in Fredericksburg and an additional $100 gift card that can be used toward gas or food for a trip to the Texas Hill Country, courtesy of Xi Chi Pi sorority’s annual scholarship fundraiser.

This year the sorority has added a second raffle. 

A dove hunt on the Belcher Ranch, for up to four hunters, will be awarded. The hunt can take place in 2018 or 2019.
