Members of the Shackelford County Hospital District’s board of directors heard a concern from a Moran citizen during Monday’s regular meeting, then worked through the rest of the agenda fairly quickly, including a brief closed session

During the public forum portion of the meeting, Christina Zinn of Moran asked if there could be a backup plan for pharmacy closure, stating that it had been a hardship on several older Moran citizens when Sanders Drug Store was closed because of the weather earlier this month.

The call is being sounded for any members of the community who would like to be part of the 85th anniversary edition of the Fort Griffin Fandangle to come to rehearsals.

The first rehearsal of the season is set for Monday, Feb. 27 at the Aztec Theater starting at 7:30 p.m.

“Everyone is welcome to come be a part of the show,” artistic director Lorna Ayers said. “And it’s not all about being able to sing. We have many things for people to do in addition to singing. If you want to be in the show, we will find you a spot.”

None of the six local entities located within the county will need to hold elections on May 6, although there was one race that was contested until a candidate withdrew on Tuesday.

The filing period for each of the local races ended Friday, Feb. 17, with the Fort Griffin SUD board drawing more candidates than terms expiring this year.

Commodities will be distributed Thursday, March 2 in Moran and Friday, March 3 in Albany at the usual times.

Families who have not yet returned their applications for the 2023 program must turn in paperwork, either before or on site, before receiving their food.

Shackelford County FFA and 4-H members continued their participation in the San Antonio and San Angelo livestock shows over the past week.

Six of 10 Albany FFA members showing barrows at San Antonio placed in their classes. Chelsy Parsons had the top finish with a second-place showing and reserve champion with her Duroc.

Tye Edgar finished third with his Spot. Crew Spencer had the seventh-place Duroc.

A group of three band students earned medals at the UIL Solo and Ensemble contest held at Wylie High School on Saturday.

Sophomore Melanie Figueroa earned a Division I rating on a Class 3 clarinet solo, while freshman Landon Picquet, a percussionist, also brought home a Division I on a Class 2 solo.

Sophomore Chyanne Jaco competed with a Class 2 solo, earning a Division II rating.

Members of the Shackelford County 4-H sewing club spent their meeting Sunday, Feb. 19 creating apparel and accessories from items available at Closet Angels.

Shackelford County extension agent Kelsey Bell said about a dozen members along with adult leaders took part.

“The girls were so creative,” Bell said. “We had some that took shirts and pants and made jumpsuits or turned a T-shirt into a bag. It was a fun little project for them.”

Bell said the activity was the brainchild of Heather Nitschke, who volunteers at Closet Angels.

Moran ISD has two nights of fun and games on the schedule for early March.

On Thursday, March 2, Family Board Game Night will be held from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 2, at the Moran Events Center.

Door prizes will be awarded for each grade level and Moran PTO will provide hot dogs, chips and drinks.

On Wednesday, March 8, Moran’s Spring Fling will be held at the football field.

Hamburger meals will be offered starting at 5:30 p.m. Game booths will be open from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.

Each class will operate a booth.

A free throw by Adam Hill in the last seconds of overtime gave Albany the win in a bi-district game Tuesday that was a battle from the beginning.

Tied up at the end of regulation time because of a Seymour free throw, the Lions eventually defeated the Panthers 54-53 in a nail-biter. Details will be reported next week.

The Albany Lady Lions got the 2023 softball season underway last week, going 2-4-1 in the first seven games.

None of the games lasted beyond five innings.

The Lady Lions make their second tournament outing of the season this weekend at San Angelo. On Friday, Feb. 25, Albany will play pool games against Bangs, Forsan, and Midland Christian. Bracket play will be held Saturday, Feb. 26.
