The Albany Lions locked up a basketball playoff berth with their regular win over Haskell on Feb. 9, ending up with second place in District 10-2A after Anson lost to Cisco last Friday.
The Lions (10-6, 9-3) will face Petrolia (14-8, 7-4) on Friday, Feb. 19 in the bi-district playoff game in Mineral Wells. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. with Albany serving as the home team.

The Moran varsity boys’ basketball team was scheduled to wrap up its season last week with games against May and Baird. The game against Baird was cancelled and will not be made up.
Moran athletes will now move into track and tennis seasons.

The varsity Bulldogs traveled to May on Tuesday, Feb. 9 and lost the game 51-5.
Arren Hawley was the leading scorer with three points, followed by Corey Miller with two points.
Max Balliew earned the honor of being on Tarleton’s Scholastic Honors Dean’s List in the Fall 2020 semester.
This distinction is the University’s way of honoring and celebrating academic achievements from the spring semester.
The Scholastic Honors Dean’s List is one of the highest honors Tarleton State University confers on our students. Given the difficulties experienced during this semester, academic performance is all the more impressive.

Albany High School graduate Maggy Karl has earned the honor of being placed on Tarleton State University’s Scholastic Honors College of Business Dean’s List for the fall 2020 semester.
Karl is attending TSU online and is classified as a sophomore. She is employed fulltime as a teller at InterBank in Throckmorton.
Her parents are Lisa Edgar Cauble and Cody Karl.

Project Graduation organizers have announced their next fundraiser for the annual celebration held for Albany’s graduating seniors.
Senior parent and organizer Tisha Wilkins reported this week that the next fundraiser will be a ‘To-Go’ lunch starting at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 28 at The Feed Store.
The menu will include chicken spaghetti, salad, garlic bread, drink, and homemade dessert. Donations will be accepted as payment.

Students at Nancy Smith Elementary School have been challenged to read about America during the month of February.
Organized by NSES library aide Megan Henry, fifth and sixth grade students have been encouraged to read a book from the ‘Dear America’ collection in exchange for a Dairy Queen coupon for a frozen treat.
The premise of the challenge is based on a quote by Harry S. Truman which states, “America was not built on fear. America was built on courage, on imagination and an unbeatable determination to do the job at hand.”

Local pastors are working on plans for the Ministerial Alliance’s Easter Community Service.
First Baptist Church pastor and Alliance president Jeff Turner said this week that he and Luke Spraberry from Bethel Assembly are in the early stages of planning the traditional Easter service, which traditionally takes place on Palm Sunday evening.
No details were available at press time, but the Alliance hopes to host the service at a time and location to be announced as soon as plans are finalized.

The recent winter blast pushed back several events scheduled for last week, including the worship night at The Feed Store.
Feed Store Executive Director Tisha Wilkins said the worship night, featuring speaker Riley Israel, has been rescheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 24.
Israel, a native of Americus, Georgia, was seen at church every time there was a service thanks to his upbringing by his parents and grandparents.

Closet Angels hosted a fundraiser to benefit Albany resident Kristi Brooker on Monday, Feb. 8, raising a total of $252.
Brooker is currently undergoing treatment for stage four breast cancer, and the fundraiser was held to help Brooker keep her health insurance.
Closet Angels director and fundraiser organizer Lori Reames thanked everyone who participated in the event.

Albany UIL students are hoping to get in one more practice meet before the upcoming district UIL meet scheduled in Stamford on Wednesday, March 24.
Holliday High School is hosting a virtual academic meet and has sent out materials to all participating schools including Albany High School participants.
Originally, the materials were to be received on Friday, Feb. 12 with writing entries due Tuesday, Feb. 16 and the other entries due on Thursday, Feb. 18.
