AHS golfers lead after first round

Albany High School golfers played their second round at the district tournament Wednesday at Maxwell Municipal Golf Course in Abilene, but results weren’t available at press time.

The AHS boys’ team was leading the pack after Monday’s first round, also played at Maxwell, with Lute Wheeler recording a 19-hole total of 83 for the first overall. Houston Heatly was third over with 87. Both boys are freshmen.

Lions stay on top with 5-0 record

The Lion baseball team knocked off the top-ranked team in Class 2A in a District 8-2A match-up against Anson last week to take the lead in the district race as the first half of district games comes to an end.

Albany hosted Hawley on Tuesday, earning an 11-1 win to remain undefeated through the first round of league action. Details of the game will be reported next week.

The Lions have a 11-3-1 overall record and are 5-0 in district.

Lady Lions keep district tied up with big wins

The Lady Lion softball team earned a pair of wins last week in Cisco and Gorman, maintaining a three-way tie for first place in district with a 4-1 record.

Albany finished the first round of district with an 11-4 win over Cisco, then started the second round with a 19-4 blowout in Gorman.

Track teams take 17 athletes to area meet

A total of 17 members of the Lion and Lady Lion track teams qualified to advance to the area track meet next week in 16 events, including four relays.

Albany hosted the District 10-2A meet on March 31, with the varsity boys team taking third place with 100 points and the girls team finishing fourth with 81 points. The JV boys also finished fourth as a team with 52 points.

The Hawley boys topped the boys varsity division with 157 points, while the Haskell girls won their division with 166 points.

Moran track teams compete

The Moran varsity track team members competed at the Paint Rock Indian Relays on Friday, March 26. 

The next meet will be the District 13A meet on April 9 at May High School.

Varsity Girls Results

Alli Scott placed second in the long jump and first in the 100 meter and 300 meter hurdles.

Johnnie Hise finished second in the high jump and third in the 200 meter dash. 

Hannah Noble won second in the 100 meter and 200 meter dashes and Dariann Hawley was fourth in the high jump.

Lady Lions get big win over Cisco

The Lady Lion softball team split games last week, suffering the first district loss in Eula on Friday but getting back in the win column earlier this week.

The Lady Lions traveled to Cisco on Tuesday, bringing back a big 11-4 win to advance to a 9-9 record for the season. Details will bee reported next week.

Albany will host Gorman on Friday at 12:00 p.m.

The team is open next week because two district schools didn’t field teams this season.

Jr. high track teams finish strong

All four of the junior high track teams fared well at the District 10-2A meet last Saturday in Hamlin, with the eighth grade boys winning their division.

The eighth grade boys scored a total of 160.3 points for first place. The seventh grade boys scored 133 points to take second place.

In the girls division, the seventh grade team was third with 66 points, while the eighth grade girls finished in fifth with a total of 59 points.

AHS golfers prepare for district meet

In their last two warm-up meets before next week’s district tournament, Albany High School golfers have continued to improve and turned in some impressive results from a March 29 practice at Shady Oaks Golf Course in Baird.

AHS athletes also played at Shady Oaks the previous Tuesday.

The local boys team didn’t place as a team, but golf coach Tate Thompson was encouraged with their performance.

“There were four of our district opponents at this tournament, and we beat all of them,” said Thompson.

Estridge earns state champ title

It’s been six years in the making with the past four years of dedicated hard work, but Albany High School senior athlete Wesley Estridge finally made his goal become a reality.

Estridge lifted his way to win the Division 3 super heavyweight class at the Texas High School Powerlifting Association state meet held this past Saturday at the Taylor County Expo in Abilene.

“I don’t feel like I can take credit for it,” said Estridge. “If it hadn’t been for all the support I had at the state meet, I don’t know that I’d have done as well as I did.”

Lions post 3-0 in district

The Lion baseball team opened district last week with a pair of wins, including a rally for a win over Stamford and a no-hitter against Haskell.

Albany hosted Anson on Tuesday, posting a 7-5 win over the top-ranked Tigers, improving their record to 9-3 overall and 3-0 in district.

The Lions will travel to Cisco on Thursday, April 1, with a first pitch at 4:30 p.m. The JV game against Cisco was cancelled.
