The Albany Lady Lions basketball team entered its final game before the holiday break still in search of their first District 10-2A win.

After dropping district games to Cisco and Hawley last week, the Lady Lions hosted Haskell on Tuesday, Dec. 20, losing 41-30. Details will be reported in the Jan. 5 edition of The Albany News.

“I feel like we’re at a standstill,” Lady Lions coach Tate Thompson said. “We’re still trying to find some roles for people and find a groove.”

Albany will have a mandatory five-day dead period over Christmas before returning to action Wednesday through Friday, Dec. 28-3, at the May tournament.

“I think the break’s going to be good for us,” Lady Lions coach Tate Thompson said. “We’ve had a lot of distractions with football. Hopefully, we’ll come back and be able to string together some district wins.”

Albany opened district play Tuesday, Dec. 13 with a 71-27 home loss to Cisco. That was followed by a 46-34 road loss Friday, Dec. 16, at Hawley.

“We started slow against Hawley, and that hurt us because we pretty much played with them the rest of the game,” Thompson said. “We got behind and played catch-up the whole time.”

Against Cisco, the Lady Lions fell behind 23-11 in the first quarter, then were outscored 41-6 over the middle two. Kiana Roberson led Albany with 12 points, going 8 of 8 on free throws, while Caroline Chapman added seven points and Briley Tabor had six.

At Hawley, Albany trailed 17-9 after the first quarter and 31-17 at halftime before outscoring the Lady Bearcats in the second half. Roberson had 13 points with Tabor adding six. Callan Edgar, Caroline Holson, and Chapman each scored five.

One issue hampering the team, Thompson said, has been a number of players battling illness.

“It seems like it’s somebody different every day,” he said. “We haven’t had two or three at a time, but we’ll have one out, and when she gets healthy, somebody else will get sick. It’s been kind of sporadic.”
