Bulldogs run into buzzsaw

The Moran Bulldogs ran into a buzzsaw Friday, Sept. 29, falling 52-0 at state-ranked Rochelle.

Moran (2-4) plays its final nondistrict game at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6 against Vernon Northside at Bulldog Field.

Against Rochelle, which was ranked No. 8 by sixmanfootball.com and No. 10 by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, the Bulldogs managed 130 total yards.

Ellis Hise was 8 of 13 passing for 63 yards and Garrett Hamilton went 4 of 6 for 20 yards.

JV loses to tough Cisco team

For the second time this season, turnovers were detrimental for the Albany Lion junior varsity football team.

Albany lost the ball four times Thursday, Sept. 28 in a 35-12 loss to Cisco at Robert Nail Memorial Stadium.

“Our kids played hard,” JV coach Rod Britting said. “It wasn’t a lack of effort. Up until their last touchdown, we were playing hard. We just needed a couple of breaks and didn’t get them.”

Lady Cubs split Hawley games

The Albany Junior High Lady Cubs volleyball teams split a pair of matches Monday, Oct. 2 at Hawley in their final road trip of the season.

The Lady Cubs play their last three dates at home, starting Thursday, Oct. 12, against Bangs. The Silver team will play at 4:30 p.m., followed by the White and Red teams.

Just the White and Red teams played at Hawley on Monday.

The White won in three sets 19-25, 25-17, 15-10.

Runners to compete at district Oct. 11

Albany cross country runners got their final tune-up before district competition Sept. 27 at Dublin.

Albany will compete at the District 10-2A meet Wednesday, Oct. 11 at Hawley. High school races start at 9:00 a.m. with junior high runners taking the course at 4:00 p.m.

The top three varsity teams and the top 10 individuals at the district meet advance to the Region II-2A meet Oct. 23 at Lynn Creek Park in Grand Prairie.

At Dublin, Albany had just three varsity runners due to injuries and illness.

Back To Business

After taking an open date last week, the Albany Lady Lions got back to business in the District 6-2A volleyball race Saturday, Sept. 30, sweeping Coleman 25-13, 25-18, 25-15 on the road.

Albany (25-5 overall, 2-1 district) hosted Hawley on Tuesday, Oct. 3, losing a hard-fought four-set battle 14-25, 25-18, 22-25, 23-25. Details will be reported next week.

Albany returns to the road at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 6 with a district match at Ranger.

Lions to host Miles after week off

The Albany Lions relied on smothering defense during a 5-0 nondistrict run that pushed the program’s winning streak to 16 games.

The Lions, who had an open date last week, face another test from another high-powered offense at 7:00 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6, when they host Miles in the District 6-2A Division II opener at Robert Nail Memorial Stadium.

“I felt like we had a good open week,” Lions head coach Denney Faith said. “We were able to get some work in and put some things on that we’ve looked at.”

Bulldogs suffer homecoming loss

The Moran Bulldogs took their lumps Saturday, Sept. 23, with a 51-6 homecoming loss to the Blanket Tigers at Bulldog Field.

The Bulldogs (2-3) visit Rochelle at 7:00 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29 in their next-to-last nondistrict outing.

Blanket led 12-0 after one quarter before exploding for 39 points in the second. The Tigers led 48-0 before Ethan Boykin scored on a 70-yard pass from Ellis Hise for Moran’s lone touchdown.

Hise was 6 of 10 passing for 135 yards, rushed for 14 yards and had one reception for 6 yards.

Jr. high girls play Ranger

The Albany Junior High Lady Cubs volleyball teams wrapped up a busy midseason stretch last week and embarked on the second half of their district schedule this week.

The girls make their final road trip Monday, Oct. 2, with the Red and White teams visiting Hawley.

On Tuesday, Sept. 19, the Red and White teams traveled to Ranger. The matches concluded a stretch in which Albany Junior High teams played 14 matches in 13 days.

At Ranger, the White squad lost 18-25, 21-25.

Jr. high teams split games against Comanche

The Albany Junior High Cubs football team split a pair of games against Comanche on Thursday, Sept. 21 at Robert Nail Memorial Stadium.

The seventh grade suffered its first loss, falling 12-6, while the eighth grade rallied for a 28-16 victory.

The junior high teams are off this week as most of the Albany program takes its open date. The Cubs return to action Thursday, Oct. 5 at Miles.

A rough start put the seventh grade Cubs in a hole they couldn’t dig out of as Comanche held on for the win.

JV to host extra match-up today

The Albany Lions junior varsity football team dodged an early bullet Thursday, Sept. 21 and recovered to defeat Comanche 24-6 at Robert Nail Memorial Stadium.

The JV Lions (3-1) will host Cisco at 4:00 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, while the rest of the program takes an open date. The game was added after Albany could not find a JV opponent for the opening week of the season.

Against Comanche, Shawn Keen rushed for 150 yards and a touchdown, while Aaden Mendez, who had scores rushing and passing, threw for 97 yards.
