Moran track teams to compete at Paint Rock

The Moran varsity track team members competed over Spring Break on Thursday, March 18 at the May Tiger Relays.

The next meet is scheduled for Friday, March 26 at Paint Rock.

Hannah Noble placed second in the 100 and 200 meter dash.

Alli Scott came in first in the 100 and 300 meter hurdles and second in long jump.

Dariann Hawley was third in the 800 meter run and fifth in high jump.

Lions, Lady Lions get back on field for district games

After taking a break last week, the Lion baseball team and Lady Lion softball girls both returned to district play this week.

The softball team was 2-0 as spring break started, with district wins over Gorman and Baird.

The girls traveled to Cross Plains Tuesday, winning 13-5. Details will be reported next week.

The team will play in Eula on Friday, March 26, starting at 5:00 p.m., followed by another district bout in Cisco on Tuesday, March 30.

Estridge to compete at state meet

Senior athlete Wesley Estridge has worked his way to the top of Region 6, Division 3 Single Heavy Weight Powerlifting, and has advanced to the state meet, set for Saturday, March 27 in Abilene.

A send-off for Estridge will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, March 26, with Estridge weighing in that afternoon at the Taylor County Expo Center and competing on Saturday starting at 8:30 a.m. 

Tickets are $5 each and are general admission only. Those wishing to attend the meet can purchase tickets at ­taylorcountyexpocenter.com.

The Big Country Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) recently announced the list of coaches and athletes selected to participate in the Big Country Chevy Dealers 2021 FCA All-Star Festival.

Albany High School senior athletes selected for football are Ryder Wilkins for the Red Team and Wesley Estridge for the Blue Team.

Wilkins and Estridge will face off against each other on Saturday, June 12 at the 22nd Annual Myrle Greathouse All-Star Football Classic in Abilene.

Track teams prepare for district meet

Despite schedule conflicts because of spring break last week, the Lion and Lady Lion track teams competed well at the Eastland meet held March 18.

The varsity boys won both relays they competed in at Eastland and had several jumpers medal, while the girls placed in the lone relay they ran and finished well in field events.

The Albany teams will compete at Breckenridge on Thursday (today) starting at 4:00 p.m. with field events and 6:15 p.m. with running events.

Moran basketball honors reported

Several Moran athletes have received honors following the 2020-2021 basketball season.

Senior Dariann Hawley was named to the First Team Academic All-State Team.

Senior Corey Miller and junior Arren Hawley received Honorable Mention honors, with Hawley also named Academic All-District.

AJHS track teams host March 9 meet

The junior high track teams competed in a local meet on March 9, continuing to improve times and distances in preparation for the district meet set for March 27 in Hamlin rather than Albany.

Eighth grade girls coach M.J. Reneau said that her team members turned in stronger finishes.

“We improved our times on all of our relays this week,” she said. “Our handoffs looked a lot better. I thought that overall, the girls looked stronger and better conditioned during this meet.”

AHS tennis team to host tri-meet

Members of the Albany High School tennis team were on local courts March 9, hosting players from Cisco and Breckenridge in a tri-meet to prepare for next month’s district tournament.

Local players will host Anson and Rotan on Monday, March 22. Those results will be reported next week.

“These practice meets are beneficial for us because we can get several short matches in within a short amount of time,” said coach Sara Wilson. “The kids can then go on to their next activity.”

Volunteers needed for concessions

The recent lifting of mask restrictions has changed the location of the junior high district track meet which eliminates the concession stand planned by the Albany Athletic Booster Club.

All junior high school track teams in the district will now compete at Hamlin on Saturday, March 27 instead of being divided between two communities. 

The Athletic Boosters will still host the concession stand for the high school district track meet on Wednesday, March 31.

Albany tracksters to be in Eastland

Albany tracksters competed against mostly larger schools, along with windy West Texas conditions last Saturday at the Pied Piper Relays in Hamlin.

The local track teams will be on the road to Eastland on Thursday (today) for the next meet, then head back to Breckenridge on March 25 in preparation for the district meet in Albany on March 31.

The Albany boys placed in all three relays in Hamlin over the weekend, while the girls finished sixth in the 800 meter relay.
