An open house for the recentlycompletedHouses for Healing ministry in Abilene is set for Saturday, June 29, showcasing the 20-house complex including one sponsored and furnished by Albany Methodist Church.
Visitors and locals alike will be able to enjoy a host of activities offered in Albany this weekend and next during performance dates for the Fort Griffin Fandangle. Free events will be offered on all four of those days including a quilt show, tracker organ concert, calliope concert, car museum, viewing the animals on the courthouse square, exhibits and activities at the Old JailArt Museum, plus several others.
Tuesday was the perfect time for the Shackelford County Library children’s hour to feature a program on longhorns, coinciding with the opening of this year’s production of the Fandangle. Elementary children were treated to a display of horns and hides inside the library before heading outside to get a close up view of the actual longhorns, brought to town from Fort Griffin by herd manager Will Cradduck along with Frank Sharp.
Brian Hamilton of Albany is one of more than 700 students who received diplomas and were recognized as Harding University graduates during the Spring 2024 commencement ceremony on May 4, 2024. Hamilton received a Bachelor of Business Administration in finance.

Albany graduate Tyler Chapman has been selectedtoreceivecollege scholarship awards established by Nancy and Ted Paup in 2011. The Paups note that participation in athletics “teaches students the importanceofteamwork, self-discipline, pursuit of excellence, and mutual respect.” Thescholarshipispresented attheBigCountry Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet each spring.
MichelleAlexander was appointed to the board of the Shackelford County Hospital District after she and David Henry had both expressed an interest in serving. Alexander was sworn in following a secret ballot vote at the beginning of Monday night’s meeting.
In spite of windy conditions, local volunteer fire fighters were able to contain and extinguish a wildfire south ofAlbany on Tuesday afternoon. Personnel from the Shackelford County, Albany City, and Moran fire departmentsallresponded to a report of a fire on the YL Ranch about 3:00 p.m.
Preliminary scores for the spring 2024 STAAR testing for grades 3-8 and End of Course (EOC) testing for high school were released by the Texas EducationAgency over the last week, with local scores exceeding or matching statewide scores in most areas. Results were mixed compared to last year’s scores for local students in tested areas, but results were higher among nine of 14 tested areas in grades 3-8 as compared to the statewide average.
Pet owners are urged to enter their pets in the annual Pet Parade on Saturday, June 29. All types, sizes and colors are welcome to take part, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
